Where can I go to find more info about the northwood P4? In a few months I'll be able to spend some $$$ on a new system and from what I've read mainly through posts northwood seems to be the thing. AMD seems to be maxing out shortly although right now they have best performance for price on their side

any good links for info???

Well Asus has a little bit about it in the press release for their new i845 board. I would love to tell you more, but I risk violating an NDA. I can say it has 512K of L2 cache, and it overclocks real well, but I'm not going to give you numbers or benchmarks. I think many will find it inticing when it's released.

TC, are you going to get one? Looks like you already have one of every other type of processor.

I already have one ;) Such are the privileges of working in the industry.

I'd rather not go into great detail, but I work for a company that supplies Intel with some of their manufacturing equipment. I do not work directly with Intel, but some people in my department have regular meetings with them in Chandler AZ. They get lots of interesting goodies, and I get to play with them when I'm a good boy :)

sounds interesting....what type of RAM would be best to use with northwood or p4 in general...esp. for overclocking

If you want the best performance I'd go with pc800 rdram. Samsung generally has the best yields, since they've basically already ramped their production up in anticipation of the new speed grade, so it overclocks pretty well.

thanks for the info...in a few months when i'm out of debt i'll be able to buy a new system...just like to plan ahead...and this time I want to try for the best

Or pretty darn close

Is it safe to presume that the 512k cache results in improved seti times?

Hey TC, if you really have some inside information, can you tell us up to where is the Tualatin Server will get. I've heard of the 1.4-S, but haven't found no other iformation.

Yes, about as much as it helps the P3S - which is a few minutes depending on the speed of course.

As I said - I do not work for Intel, so I don't really have "inside" information such as road maps etc. All I get are some of the engineering samples that come through here. As of yet the only Tualatin sample I have seen was the 1.2GHz with 256K of cache, but of course I now own a retail 1.26GHz with 512K. Judging by how well it overclocks 1400 would be easy for them to pull off today if they wanted. Rumors of 1.7GHz are perhaps a bit wishful. Intel really has no plans to keep this chip around in a desktop or server role. It was primarily intended to replace the mobile P3 and celeron. I have no doubt we'll see up to possibly 1.5GHz in laptops at some point, but whether they will have desktop versions is iffy.

I know you didn't tell us much but just enough to make us drool!

thanks for all the info. any hints like how many seconds for a WU in Seti?

Fortunately, for me, I have the inside scooop on what the Intel desktops are going to be. I have a friend that was at Intel for his internship, in the desktop platforms departement. He moved on Tuesday, and I'm waiting till he gets settled in, and connected to start bombarding him with questions. Keep you guys posted about my findings.

Hello,

Do you know what is the cpuid of the Northwood ? (if it is not a confidential information of course).

Beside, just for information, does the Northwood use an enhanced FPU as it was told in some web sites ?

Thanks, and best regards,
FD

Wasn't sure if maybe it was an engineering sample with only 256....guess we'll find out more info in the next few months

I've found the cpuid info here :

BTW, it's the first test of a Northwood.
