Hello,

I'm interested in upgrading my system from a Intel Pentium II 350 to an AMD K6 II 500, and I was wondering which mother board you folks would recomend. I plan on over clocking the CPU and using a closed loop water system for cooling. Here is a few guide lines so you can have a better idea of what I am looking for so you don't start making a dream list.

Current Ram: 256 megs PC100 (Don't want to upgrade if I don't have too)

Price range: $100 - $200 Cdn or $75 - $150 USD

Board preferences: No on board garbage would be nice. ie no on board sound , video, or network card etc... Usual ports are ok though. ie serial, parallel and USB etc... Jumperless is a must for ease of overclocking unless something easier has become available that I haven't heard of yet.

I think that's about it. If there's anything that you would like to know that I missed post your question and I'll try and answer it as soon as I can. Thank you for your time and your help.

Well personally I'm quite happy with my mobo, nicely overclockable and non-ddr (so I could use my existing RAM).

However, DDR is much more affordable now, so that's one route to go down and I'd say the 8K7A from EPOX is a pretty good board.

If you don't wanna go DDR just yet, there are quite a few top boards from Abit, Asus and Epox out there. But if you're serious about overclocking you'll wanna ditch that PC100 RAM, that'll really hamper your overclock ability.

PS welcome to the forum :)

dont bother with K6-2.... get a duron, prices are about the same! my bro is using an ABIT KT7A works fine with pc100 SDRAM.... also stick with aircooling if price is a concern, something like an SK6 is a good bet! my bro uses a vantec CCK-6035D very impressive and cheaper than SK6........ keeps his duron 850 about 3-4 degrees abocve ambient at idle, and hottest i seen it is 34 celsius full load

800mhz Duron + good SDRAM M/B can be had for $150USD easy. This chip will hit 1 gig with little mods.

Welcome to the forum! Random Nonsense has a good point, the K6-2 is not worth putting money into, compared to the Duron. Find a Duron with a good stepping, and some good cooling, you will be rideing the one gig wave soon! ;)

Yeah get a Duron on a decent mobo, why bother with K6 II

Why bother with the K6 II?

Well that's easy. I can pick one up OEM for about $50 - $60 Cdn. Other than that, it's a small price to pay if I nuke it. I figure it's a good starting point to learn about over clocking. This way I'm not out a big ammount of cash if I fry the poor thing. Once I get the basics down pat then I'll go for the big guns.

The point is, you can get a duron for that price. My Duron 750 ran me $35 US a month ago. They're cheaper now.
