hey guys,
If any of you know me well enough youd know my vision is really terrible. 20/200 terrible. I end up in front of my computers all day long, and i accomplish more than someone with my sight should.
Anyways, the bright light from the CRTs is straining. At college all we have are LCDs from dell. I found myself very relaxed and able to work just fine with them, being able to veiw the whole screen, rather alittle segment where im typing.
LCDs cost A TON though, and with my wonderful sight, i cant really get a decent job, nor get there and back. Atleast not yet. Its been awhile since i contacted the Cleveland Sight Center, and theresa good reason for that, their stuff to assist the visually impaired is well over priced, and they pretty much try to take control over your life at a young age and keep you like sheltered from the world.
So is there any kind of place that has LCDs for my kind? Thanks in advance guys.

Cheapest I've seen is $179 fora 17" with no DVI and that's with a bunch of MIRs, usually $50-$70. Plenty of places have them for that. Wal-Mart has a nice one made by ILO that has a DVI input and no MIRS for $235
Are you currently studying any courses or anything similar?
Over here I know a few people who have dyslexia and other disabilities and are entitled to things like a free laptop to help them with their studies.

I am sad to see that last sentence..I many years ago Managed a Transmission repair facility and had a mechanic that was blind..And I do mean blind,Kurt would not see anything you placed in front of his eyes. But he was a hell of a transmission remover and installer. So good in fact our local news paper did a story on him for his abilities.
I sorta took offense with your comment only because Kurt was such a dynamic person and so accepting of his situation,If you only could here him asking if I wanted the car test driven lol,or if he could check my oil levels..He was so cool...Any way i am outa here..Good luck looking for a moniter..

too bad its not 179$ with 70$ MIR, id do that. i have 3 occupying my desk, 2 on the dually, 1 on the mac.

studying any courses? Currently im only taking the boring classes at the community college. It sucks, cause its going to take me much longer to get my 2 year degree. my school schedule revolves around when can my parents drive me. The disability dept at this college is just terrible. IMO worthless, i was told id have someone walk me to my classes first day. I get there, theyre like "we're busy come back later" im like "hey i have class now" so the one "counselor" is like "ok, well see way over there?" i reply "no, i am visually impaired thats why im at the access office asking for your help" hes like "anyways, about a quarter mile beyond the parking lot is the building you want to be in" took me 50minutes to find it, but my english prof was understanding. that was one of my best classes, even tho i dispise english with a passion.
From then on i decided heck with them, and im not alone. Theyre worthless. We help each other out when we get the chance, only its not very obvious that i cant see well. you could stare at me for hours and not notice.
My current english class, once ina while i have to do in class writtings. THe material is no problem, but my handwritting is unreadable by anyone other than me. I am allowed to use the comp in the room, which is no problem except for the fact that itsa dell and doesnt work right. My nice photography teacher from highschool just donates her old mac stuff to me, she knows i cant see. She gave me a 21" CRT and her old G3. And tmr im supposed to go get an old wallstreet. Which my eng prof says i can use in class so thats nice.
hopefully whenever i make it to the full college they have a program like that. community is crap, you hafta pay extra for the audio books, they tel you theyll give you a person to take notes for your classes, never happens....i just go by ear.

Thats pretty impressive, im guesing he did it by feel? Around here tough, someone whos 18, cant stand to be in daylight for any real amount of time...nor can get aorund....not easy to get a job. That is really impressive, i dont know crap about cars. im sure if i drove id learn them inside out like i did computers.
See i used to have sight, pretty good sight too. All the way up until summer of my sophomore year ...it just like exponentially decreased, the Dr's dont know why. Me and my bro have the same thing, its super rare (Congenital Nystagmus) we are by far 2 of the weirdest cases theyve seen. We even went to this world known guy who devoted his life to its reasearch
I laugh, i was told i have no depth perception. Alright, i cant argue. i asked about 3D modeling and stuf like that, if it was doable. They told me no. I beleived it after a did poorly in the painting courses i used to be the best in. (cant do color gradients anymore) but for some unknown reason i can do 3D modeling and imaging just as good, if not better than any normal sighted person. Only thing i can think of is because ive always looked at detail.
what id like to be is a videographer/cinematographer. Thats what im really good at, i just mix in my 3D abilities and boom a masterpeice. Im currently trying to get my skills out there thru people i talk to on indieclub forums. I hadda do a reasearch paper on what id like to be, and i saw the requirements, salary, and i thoguht HEY im good at this and i love doing it.

Ah well, I would bet that the blind mechanic was going on more than feel. After all, if you know as much about transmissions as I do, one bolt is going to feel just like another. I would bet that he knew quite a bit about transmissions in order to do that job.
Heck, Beethoven never heard his later work but he knew what made music good and he was able to crank out the 9th symphony.
Both guys had to be working on pure balls to do what they did and if you are determined to be a film maker despite your challenges, you are going to need the same type of determination. And it sounds like you do.
As far as finding a low cost source of computer hardware, I have been looking for something similar as I work with disabled people who can't afford the big bucks to keep current. The bad news is that what I have found to date tends to be quite a bit older than would lend to LCD monitors. Seriously, a lot of what I find are the old 80486 computers and occasionally a P1 or P2. It is so hard to get anything useful that I have put serious thought into starting a small business making “good enough” computers.
As far as finding a job goes, I could also offer that some of the guys that I play paintball with have put together an indie studio by finding the talent they needed right on various forums. They did the basic filming for their first job on the strength of credit cards and once that was done, they started emailing all the files to everyone who could help with the project. Some of the visual effects were done in Europe for example. The movie is going to be released in about a month. And what I have seen of it is looking quite good. Here is a link to their site if you want to have a look see.

In principal, you could do something like that and the work you do will be the only thing that anyone even needs to know about. You know the old saying about “on the internet nobody cares if you are a dog”.

hey Malpine willas thats pretty cool...once i finish this video im working on now ill look into that. thats what were doing now, im in cleveland, the lady thats filming is in boston and i send the files via email or MSN
yea im determined....the only thing holding me back right now is the inability to drive. which apparently someone with my disease devised a way for us to do so..using these huge goggle-like glasses with mirrors and all kindsa stuff...you go for training courses, lasts 3 months i beleive. for the first year you can only drive daylight, and if after 1 year you had no accidents or violations you get a unrestricted license...apparently people with worse vision tthan mine can get it...some lady with glocoma (did not spell that right) and macular distrophy got her license this way...i will just have to customize it for myself with my sensativity to bright lights. i just decided to wait til our terrible winter is over to learn
EDIT: HOLY CRAP that site is good
