Would it be the same as installing SATA hard drive?

shouldn't be too hard to do, as long as the SATA controller is native to the chipset and not a bolt-on chip. If it's native, it's the same as installing on an IDE CD-ROM

i plugged my plextor into the third sata slot on my ic7 controlled by SI chip. I tried to boot from cd rom and it just blew by it without asking for any kind of discs.

I'd take a guess, that you may need to attach it to the ICH5 mounted SATA ports to allow it to boot natively. You may be able to select boot from the SI chip, if it's allowed through BIOS. Provided it does boot on the SI chip, then installing the drivers for the SI chipset will be necessary. This is where you will likely have problems. The chipset drivers will be looking to install a HDD or array rather than an optical drive. Usually, one of two things happen when using disk controllers without the proper information available to the BIOS. Either the OS install stops with an invalid disk while switching to copying files from the CD due to inability to read the files after the driver is installed or the driver will be unable to install the optical drive using the available drivers.

probably will stick it into my first SATA port when i switch to AMD.
