View Full Version : Will Copper Ram Sinks on Geforce 2gts help?
I put the borb on my herc profit 2 gts and the increase was real nice. I'm able to push my memory to 425 stable now. before with the original HSF I would be able to get 360-75 for an hour or so.
When I took off the orignal HSF I noticed how much it need to be lapped.
Now I'm thinkin of taking my mem sinks off and lapping them or getting some copper ones.
Would this help, has anyone upgraded ram heat sinks. how much more performace did you see. is it worth the cost?

I dont think you will see any difference between anodized aluminum or copper Ramsinks.
I tried copper ramsinks and got no improvment over Radio Shack ramsinks.......Heck I even took some spare 3 mil silver stock I have and made baseplates for the radioshack ramsinks and still no improvement, but they sure are cool looking ;)

Ram Sinks are useless!!
I would not say that vid card RAM sinks are totally useless. However, they don't do as much as you might think. I installed RAM sinks on my MX card and only was able to overclock the memory a couple more MHz. Not much, but us hardcore tweakers will take any kind of performance gain, no matter how small.

Well that's because MX's are bargain cards that run at low frequencies, and are not as dependant on RAM as, say, a GeForce2 Ultra that's overclocked.
If you have a quality card, and you want to overclock, you MUST have RAMsinks. They are as far from useless as you could possibly get.
On a Radeon, or a GeForce MX, sure, they're pointless. Those card' RAM don't build up heat. On a GeForce GTS, or Pro, or Ultra, of GF3, they're an absolutely a nessecity for overclocking.

And you, sir, need to buy a better card then you have. If you don't need RAMsinks on your card, you're not overclocking it right!
Since I already have ramsinks on it, would upgradeing them be worth it?
Right I'm working on cutting up some old HS's and thinkin about using them for Ramsinks....
I have the blorb on my card.....How much better would an old P2 350 HSF be?
I already have the HS...I'll send pix later, I'm just waiting till I have time to get some silver epoxy. Hopefully I can find a high performance fan for it. I'm not sure if its 50 or 60mm.

It's up to you wether or not you want to upgrade them. You need to ask yourself a critical question--Am I an overclocker, and do I want the best performance possible?
Yes, a P2 HSF would work better then a blorb. Trim it if you need to, ad attach it with Arctic Silver Adhesive. It's 60mm.

i added ramsinks to my pro and i was able to overclock it higher but my highest stable overclock only went up 10 mhz(450-460)....which still makes a difference, especially if your cpu isnt your bottleneck :(........and Phlubb i wouldnt say that the radeons are low quality cards because they dont need ramsinks....they are superiorly designed, just like a p4 can run without a heatsink......

Yes you're almost right. The necessity of RAMsinks on the overclocked GF line cards starts from GF2 Pro, Ultra, and GF3, not the GF2 GTS as this one doesn't build enough heat in the RAM and they just don't overclock as high as the Pro or Ultra ones. GF2 Pro's do overclock higher and heat up a lot more on the RAM chips therefore they're in need for better cooling on the RAM. :p
