Well, here's the story, i'm in need of a new rig, and my local store "fry" is blowing out celeron D socket 478 for about 60 bucks a pop. The same celeron D on socket 775 is about 88 dollar. so i'm saving roughly 30 bucks on the chip. Is there any reason that i should pick the socket 775 over the 478? thanks.
PS: i know the As8 is a good board for the 775, is there similar board for 478? i'm looking for about 3.8 to 4ghz on this chip.

LGA775 is not a socket - it is a "land grid array" where the pins are on the motherboard and not the CPU. The 775 implies 775 pins.

Socket 478 is a socket, where the pins are on the CPU. This has 478 pins.

LGA775 boards are newer, and support PCIexpress and DDR2 in many cases. If that is the way you want to go, go LGA775.

If you want to reuse an AGP video card and PC3200 DDR RAM then S478 may be best for you.

The LGA775 Celeron D's are guaranteed to be the E0 stepping. The socket 478 are available in both D0 and E0 stepping (get the E0 if possible). I would go with Abit IC7-G if you decide on the socket 478.

LGA775

Only difference is DDR2 support and a new socket / power regulations

I haven't seen socket T motherboards up close before. How do you mount the heatsink on those things?

by the 4 mounting hole, even the stock sink uses the 4 mounting holes.

got anything cheaper batboy? the AS8 is only 92, i want something cheaper than that, or else the money that i save from moving to socket T to socket 478 is wasting, i save 30 bucks moving the chip over, and you showed me the board that's 40 bucks more :). i'm going for cheap here :)

You basically use pushpins in the 4 mounting holes. Since I have an Thermalright sink which requires an adapter, I have a backplate with to prongs to hold the XP-120s clips into position

You want a cheaper socket 478 mobo than the IC7-G? Can it be a newegg refurb?

oh, i guess we have a problem there :) i would thought that socket 478 mobo would be cheaper cuzz they are rather outdated, but turns out socket 775 mobo might be cheaper :). thanks though batboy, you've been great help for me, one of the most inform guy on intel stuff that i know in this board.

I found this one batboy

ey btw is this pc going to be used for gaming? if its cheap and you want good gaming power, id get the 2.4a coupled up with an MSI 875p mobo (Neo FIS2R). never failed me, you can hit around 4ghz if you get the new E0 stepping. its also not much more expensive, but the processor will cost you about $90-$110 USD.

Well, i'm kindda stuck in between right now, cuzz if i'm going expensive, then i can go socket T and get the 530J. Or maybe a venice that's comming out in april with a 939 board. But if i'm going with socket 478 then i'm spending 100 dollar total for the mobo plus CPU. I already have the CPU picked out, it's a celeron D 2.53ghz for a mare 55 dollar.
