Ok so the instructions say to pack it with 2inches of solid foam around the drive. I don't have foam, but I do have tons and tons of high quality bubblewrap. Can I pack 2 inches of that around the drive? Will they accept it or screw me over?
Thanks

Some HDDs manufacturers quote unreasonable packing requirements - as long as you put it in an anti-static bag and it's well packed, they will accept it. I've RMA'd a few different brands (incl. Maxtor) and I just packed it as well as I could with stuff I could find round the house (bubblewrap etc).
All manufacturers are generally very good with returns because they don't want to **** you off and lose your custom in future :). Don't worry about it.

As long as it doesnt sustain damage through normal handling it should be fine.
If I send parcels I try to wrap them with some bubblewrap (a layer or two) if I have some around, then place them in a box with shredded paper. Great way to recycle those physics notes!

You should really do an advanced RMA.They send them usually the same day,and you can then send it back in the same box. While sending them yours first they have to test it before sending you another.

But they definately do not pack it with 2 inches of solid foam around it, it was more like 2 plastic inserts that attached to both ends of the drive suspending it inside the box.....

One person returned a drive to IBM under warranty, but they rejected it because it had been packed in bubble wrap. Not only that, but they logged the drive so that its warranty was void. :(

Which is just one of the reasons why IBM no longer manufacturers HDDs, and PCs for that matter ;)
