I am currently running two WD IDE DRIVES<MASTER & SLAVE>.
Using a ASUS P4P800DLX Motherboard.
Each drive has two partitions using Partition Magic.
Would like to make a copy of the Master Drive onto a Sata Drive & use it as my main drive & keep the other two drives as slaves.
My question is can I do it?
And will the drive copy onto the new one with the partitions in place?
Thanks.

Depending on your brand of SATA hard drive, go to their website and download the free utilities they have that will do just what your asking. (You may have gottem them with your drive if you bought a retail version.) I use a floppy disc version and boot up to it and it lets you select whicn partition you want to transfer to your new drive. This same utility will format your new drive if you haven't already done so. Good luck with it.

Thanks for replying.
Will I have any trouble making the new SATA the master & using the two existing drives as slaves?

SATA does not have a master/slave setting, so you do not need to worry about that. Just set the two other drives on the primary IDE channel - one as master and one as slave.

In otherwords I can leave my regular drives just like they are now & boot up into the new SATA drive?
Also if I buy a retail drive instead of a oem do they usually provide software to make a copy of my master drive to copy to the new drive?
Thanks.

Dark_15 is correct. The ide drives will still have a master and a slave as these designations only refer to that cable. The boot drive is set in the bios.

Do I have to purchase a program like Norton Ghost or is there software usually provided to make a copy of the drive with the OS on it?

No need for Norton. Just download the software at the manufacturers website. It does the same thing and it's free.

Sorry, dont mean to be a pain.
I have another question.
I am running Windows xp with service pack 1&2.
Will I have to use my windows disk with a floppy to install the drivers for the SATA Drive?

If you copy XP to a different HD you will need to reinstall XP once everything is copied over to the new HD.

I don't know about your mobo, but with my NF7-S I had to use the SATA floppy disk in the XP instalation by pressing F6 that came with my mobo to use SATA.

O, and don't delete data/format the old HD tell everything is up and working perfectly. It might just be easyer to just install XP on the new HD and then when in Windows just coppy your stuff over.

Didnt no I had to reinstall the os.
I have the ASUS P4P800DLX.
According to the manual it does support SATA.
It does say that hot plug support SATA DRIVE & CONNECTIONS ARE NOT AVAILABLE ON THIS BOARD.
This maybe getting a little to complicated for this old man.
Might have to have this done at a computer shop.
Thanks for the reply.
Probably saved me some headaches.

More than likely, yes.

EDIT:

In your case, here's what I would do. Assuming you are trying to move all your stuff from your PATA drives to the new SATA drive:

Scenario 1:

Use a utility from whatever SATA drive you get (I like Seagates the best) to copy the data from the Master PATA to your new SATA drive. After that is done, shut down the machine. Disconnect your PATA drive (for safety precautions ;) ) and boot off the XP CD. You will need a floppy disk with your SATA drivers on it. Load the extra drivers (press F6 at the start of setup, and then Setup will help load the drivers) and then run a repair install (First Screen - Install Windows, Second Screen - repair install). This will overwrite the registry and the windows folder, but will leave your documents and settings alone. Download and install all your service packs/patches as well. You will also need to reinstall applications like Office, etc.

After that is done, reconnect your PATA drives and import them through the logical disk manager (Right click on My Computer -> Manage -> Disk Management) and you should be all set!

Scenario 2:

Disconnect both PATA drives for now. Save yourself some headache ;)...

Install windows XP on your SATA drive - you may require to load some drivers during the install. Once that is done, install your drivers, services packs/patches, then software. Make sure the BIOS is set to boot from SATA first. From there, reconnect the PATA drives. Copy any data off them that you want. You will have to reinstall applications here as well.

Hopefully that should help you! If you have any questions, feel free to ask them here or PM me! Good Luck!
