Lots of water, fiber, protein, moderate carbs. Cut down on saturated fats. Go walking, no membership needed for that :D.
How tall are you?

You could also do lunges with 2-1 gallon empty milk jugs, put some water in them. Push-ups, ab crunches.
Also if you have the room get you one of those cheap punching bags, boxing workouts are great.

Don't bother trying to focus on a certain location when losing fat. Fat generally comes off uniformly and you'd be best just sticking to a regular cardio workout.

I hope youīre very very tall :)
Donīt drive anywhere anymore. Just ride a bike, thatīs what I do. :attn: Donīt eat before you go to bed. (eh, donīt eat after 7 or 8) Instead do 30 crunches or sitttups. In fact do 50....50 when you get up, 50 before you go to bed :)
But donīt starve yourself, thatīs bad and wonīt help at all in the longer run.

Oh no I am definetally not starving my self and I have a morning workout that I do when I wake up every morning and with my current eating habits I usually end up eating 2 meals a day that is equivelant in porportion to a small burger and fries and I am really full after that...

Buy a jumprope, use it for 15 minute sets. Does a lot for cardio, and improves coordination.

I lost a lot of weight just by being lazy :). I was too lazy to get up and make food, so I just wouldn't eat. Also, I was broke, so I couldn't afford to get fast food on the way to my commute to school or back. In my book, there are 2 simple ways to lose weight (choose one):
1) Stop eating. Be lazy and don't cook. Drink water a lot. Stop eating fast food! When you do eat, eat only until you are not hungry. Not until you are full. Sleep a lot.
2) Eat often. A major problem with us humans is the (almost) instinct to eat all the food that we can (almost to the point of getting sick) with the subconcious thinking that we will never see food again. Many people do this and only eat once or twice a day. I say we should eat 3 meals, with snacks in between. Basically eat whenever we start getting hungry (but eat only enough so that it stops the hunger feeling).
I go with number 1 and it's working well for me. If I exercised like I should, I think my muscles and nice build would make up for my geeky ugliness.

Yes, buy a jumprope! Very good workout and it's fun.
And like Eclypsyr said, "Don't bother trying to focus on a certain location when losing fat". Because trying to "spot" reduce will not work. Main thing is try and keep you metabolism up.
Good luck and hang in there!

These are the things that you (and i) can do without a gym
1 Pushups, just the basic, do as much as you can then try to do more the next night and so on
2 situps, just do a lot
3 Running/walking you can leave your house and go for a run just a mile or so and try to do more and more, also make an effort to drive less, just walk places
4 jumproping owns all, seriously
on the diet i have always felt that just eating healthy works well dont bother with chips, at one point I became addicted to mini carrots, thats extream but just dont eat crap

lots of small meals,
you never want to be hungry, so keep healthy food onhand all the time, When I had to drop weight for Wrestling season, it started out by watching my food intake, only real meal I had all day was breakfast, Breakfast should be large and have the bulk of your nutrition. then I would have 3-6 snacks over the day, a snack can be a sandwich, a Granola bar, Carrot sticks, Protein drink, fruit. and so on.
Learn what a Serving size is, basically if its bigger then your fist its more then a serving, and a man of your size your fist is probably 2 servings.
Because I'm Lazy these are a few tricks I'll share
I like Spaghetti, so I make a Large Batch of Noodles and sauce, I like a meaty sauce with some veggies in it. :) anyway, I mix them together after they are cooked and divide them up into fist size containers, ( 1Lb Margarine containers is what I use ) and put them in the fridge, I've got supper for 4-6 days made now,
Zip lock bags of Carrot sticks, buy Carrots and chop them up your self, then make baggies of Carrot sticks, cheaper then getting the pre bagged ones.
V8 Splash, Great source of nutrients, having this on hand can keep you out of the Pops and other bad drinks, but even fruit juices are not great to drink lots of, Water is the most important.
Dehydrated fruit, Keep it by the computer, no more then a handful a day. a little bowl you fill up in the morning is to last you till the next morning, helps control the munchies having something small to nibble on
as for exercise, Running, Make sure when you run you run for at least 15 minutes give your body time to burn through its sugar reserves and start eating at the fat calories, every Cardio work out you do should last 15 minutes or longer.
I like Running, and Roller blading, Swimming is excellent as well, Jumping is good, but not really high on the fat burning scale.

It's basicly exercisng in the right way and eating well.
Trying to focus on a certain area does little to nothing to increas weight lost there (but it does give you more muscle there!)
Genetics determinds how your body stores fat so for each person it comes of a little differntly, but always in a similar way for the same person. Keep in mind that some people's bodies just store fat in unfortunate places. But still workout!
(so basicly what most everyone else said, as usual).

Ditto, but metabolism has a lot to do with it. Most people could eat a hamburger and gain weight. But yeah, shockingly I've lost 10 pounds since the last time I weighed myself..........What is even worse is I've been really lazy too in the last month Lol. Go figure, schedule is really off. Gotta pack in those meals & keep working out :)
Seriously cut out fast food though, I know some people don't gain a ton of weight off of it but over time it really screws with you. I've seen perfect examples from some people I knew from high school, they ate fast food every now & then........Then started eating it every single day no joke, they are so overweight now & out of shape it's not even funny.

Why are people suggesting puships and even more reason for concern: situps? Doing massive situps aren't going to get you skinny (at least, not as efficiently as other exercises). There is no such thing as spot reduction. Do you see fat people walking and running all the time, and getting skinny legs? Of course not.
Similarly, doing pushups aren't going to lose you much weight. Your arms and chest muscles will give out much quicker than you want them to.
Running is usually the best option. Walking will do wonders for you, and it's an easy exercise. Biking is also good. Swimming, rollerblading, etc. These are all cardiovascular exercises that will burn fat.
Like deRusset suggested, all your exercises should last 15+ minutes. Unless you plan on doing 15 straight minutes of pushups/situps, they aren't going to be nearly as efficient as the ones I mentioned up there.

Run for 5 mins, drop down and do 20 pushups, get up and run for another 5 mins, drop down and do 20 situps, run for another 5 mins and then jump rope for 5 mins. You can throw stairs into the mix if you want to.
My advice: do a lot of pushups to get some muscle tone. They really work the shoulders/chest/triceps/arms/abd/lower back. If you do them correctly, you'll notice a difference in your tone within 3-6 weeks. Crunches/sit-ups also really do wonders for your mid section. I would also suggest that you do some running. Start out slow, maybe 1/4 mile, and move up from there until you can do 2+ miles at a time. You would be supprised how fun running can be once you're used to it. And of course, your diet plays a huge role. Eat at regular times, no extra meals/snacks during the day, take some vitamins in addition to some good eating. Cut out soda/beer from your diet, as well as ALL fast food. It takes dedication to stay thin, you really need to want it, a lot of it is mental. Good luck, and have fun with it....working out should not feel like something you "have" to do, but something you want to do.

Lifting weights won't slim you down really. It will however give you some definition. Cardio is the best way to lose. That along with a healthy diet. Losing weight takes some time, so don't rush it. /me loves my gene pool, born pretty skinny :p

WRONG WRONG WRONG....Lifting weights WILL slim you down. Muscle takes more calories to maintain than fat does so if you eat the same amount then the muslces will consume more calories thus dropping pounds.

You're statement is absolutely right, but has no relevance. We're talking about slimming down. You just said: lift weights ==> Built muscle ==> Muscles require more calories ==> More calories are used = more weight loss.
The last part doesn't follow. We're not talking about consuming existing calories. We're talking about killing off fat. So what you just suggested is that he should build MORE muscle, and that will slim him down? That's ridiculous.
Lifting weights will burn fat, but not as efficiently as cardio exercise. Period. If you want to do cardio AND lift weights, then that's fine. The muscle you build will still be there when you get rid of your fat. Of course, when I say all this, I'm referring to efficiency; reading a book will burn calories, but it's nowhere as efficient as taking a walk.
So your theory explains why powerlifters are just so damn slim, doesn't it?
well this is what i am doing right now and it works great
Diet:
NO SODA!!!!
-lots of veggies, but i try to stay away from broccoli and califlower, the rest are great.
-decent amount of light meats, dont eat much red meat, try to eat more chicken and pork
-drink water and juice only, and an occasional protein drink, but none of that slimfast crap
-eat the same amount everyday, dont change the good habit, by eating the same amount, your body will tune itself to heighten the speed of your metabolism, and help burn excess fat
-carbs are good, but stick to whole grains and such, whitened and bleached crap are bad for you, so just dont eat them
-low sodium, sodium is good for you, but too much can also hamper your weight loss efforts, and lead to dehydration, wich can put more weight on you, due to your body going into starvation mode, more on that later
- always make sure that you eat every meal, dont miss out, mainly becuase if you dont, your body will go into a starvation mode, and store all calories, and all carbs/protein and such as fat, to be burned later, bad thing, realy bad thing
- vitamins, now here is something not talked about much, vitamins can help you get that extra energy you need to do that workout, keep your mind sharper, and all in all feel good, here is what i reccomend for a good healthy body, Vitamin B Complex, Calcium zinc and magnesium, Vitamin A, biotin, and some good old Vitamin C, stay with those and you will feel better, and be able to last longer, and guess what, Vitamin B, does what Caffeine does, without the bad sideaffects, like dehydration, mania, and chronic fatigue, hell right now i am dog tired, and i am awake due to i took my vitamins! these things are realy cheap, and are easy to get, i buy mine at sams club, you can get them at walmart also for cheap, and Daewood, i know you live there in kaysville, so you can swing by any local walmart and get some, does wonders
Exorcise
-Cardio, cardio, cardio, there is nothing like cardio, i like to swim mostly for mine, but when i go to the gym (i am now a golds gym member) i do some bike and treadmill stuff also for about 20min, and remember to drink PLENTY of water while you excorise.
-Weightraining, now this is for building some good body support in the begining, daewood, you said that you wanted to lose your gut, well you will need to build some back muscles to help lose it, trust me, so thus doing some workouts on cybex machines, or in your case just some lifting of some heavy objects, will do what you need, right now you dont need to worry about heavy weight training, it realy wont do you good, its nice to be strong, trust me, but if you dont have the endurance and lighter weight, then you are screwed
- and lastly, be sure that you do some basic pushups and situps, just to tone your uperbody muscles, oh and jumprope is great, it just gives me headaches, so i dont like it much

I hate anything that involves sweating. I did however like sports, not watching them but partaking in them. Basketball, football(soccer to the world, I'm to small for US type football) and softball. It is fun and makes you move. Doing running and single person activities are boring for social animals like myself. When I used to be active, I dug staying healthy by the way of group fitness. ... Used to have to run 5 miles a day for my job. I know how boring training is.
So going to a gym and doing something competitive would kep your intrest longer, even if you are no good at first.

I've tried dropping my one soda a day that I drink and I had terrible headaches and I felt terrible (tried that for about a month)
so I'll keep that but I am going to start to shape up (pun?)
here something to think about, with soda, for every ounce you drank, you need to replace it with 3 oz of water, so for a can of soda, drink 36oz of water, and trust me, your headaches will disapear, and if you are taking vitamins like i suggested, then you will further cut the headaches
WRONG WRONG WRONG....Lifting weights WILL slim you down. Muscle takes more calories to maintain than fat does so if you eat the same amount then the muslces will consume more calories thus dropping pounds.
I can't agree with that. Cardio will lose weight more so than weight lifting. Enough said.
lifting weights will HELP slim you down, but you need a 1:3 ratio of WT to cardio
lifting weights will HELP slim you down, but you need a 1:3 ratio of WT to cardio
Sure it's going to help you, but i wouldn't tell someone to lift weights to lose weight. They're gonna need cardo, and lots of it to lose weight. Anyone who says otherwise is nuts :p
well think about this, cardio can be done to a certain extent, then you just keep peeling out essentialy, but with some WT on the side, you will be building muscle content to help you push harder at cardio thus losing more weight, and toning those muscle that you built with WT, so all in all, its a win win situation
Why not eat before you sleep!?!? Cause im kinda doing that right now lol <works on trying to throw food he just ate>

I'm not suggesting weights are a bad thing, just saying that's not the key to weight loss. You would be supprised how much pushups can do for muscle tone, probably more than weeks of weight lifting if you do them consistently.
Why not eat before you sleep!?!? Cause im kinda doing that right now lol <works on trying to throw food he just ate>
Pretty simple, the food just sits in your stomach while you sleep, thus not being worked off at all.

Crap....Dammit atleast I didnt go for those little fudge coverd things with peanut butter inside... I ate pizza...Well I guess i'll skip breakfast :(
Don't skip breakfast, that's what will give you energy for the day. If you don't eat well in the morning, you'll feel bad all day, and be tired. Eat a good breakfast, and take vitamins like me :p
if you didnt notice, pushups are WT, duh, naw just giving you crap, but yeah toshiba, DONT EAT RIGHT BEFORE YOU GO TO BED! it makes you sleep like crap, and you gain weight, and you wake feeling not hungry, thus missing breakfast, the most important meal of the day like sucka said, and then you will continue a visious cycle that will be extremely hard to escape

Lifting weights along with a good dose of cardio is an extremly efficient way of losing weight. Lifting weights increases muscle mass which raises your BMI (Number of calories you burn while at rest). So how you claim this to be false is beyond me. All this is in elementary health books. I am not saying that it alone helps you slim down, cardio is needed as stated before but for someone to make a blatent statment that saying "weight lifting" does not assist in losing weight, they don't know what they are talking about.
Sorry for spelling errors, it is rather early and I have yet to go to sleep.
Dre
but for someone to make a blatent statment that saying "weight lifting" does not assist in losing weight, they don't know what they are talking about.
I don't think anyone said that. But weights alone won't lose you any weight, if anything, it should gain you some weight due to muscle growth. How you can figure it wouldn't, i don't know...
Pushups aren't weight training.....how do you figure so?! It is something you do without weights.

It all depends on how you lift. A lot of people combine weights with cardio at the same time (mainly beefier forearms).
I'm still behind the *homemade* hindu wrestler program though. It = pwnage.
10 min of hindu pushups (these make you big), 10 min hindu squats, 5 min flexibility, 30 min (bruce lee style jogging), 5 min flexibility. If you have extra time shadow box or spar with someone for 30min if possible. Maybe throw in a 30min weightlifting program as well.
A study showed that w/o stretching lifting weights for 2-3 weeks I believe gained 25% str, 37% by stretching before and after lifting, and 54% by having an entirely seperate stretching program.
Do you have to lift weights to slim down? No.
Can you achieve a look somewhat similar to Bruce Lee w/o lifting weights? No.

The hard part is developing that 'way.'

You should separate your weightlifting from your cardio by as close to 8hrs or more as possible because weight-lifting is anabolic and cardio is catabolic. Both are EXTREMELY good for you but will work against each other if done together or too close together. Common mistake is to pump iron for an hour then go run 3 miles.
