A client wants a machine for video editing. I know very little about video editing.
What I need to know is will a AGP card like the GeForce2 MX 400 be ok or will she need to spend more on the card. She will be editing from her sony Mini DV cam through a firewire capture card.
Any suggestions for the system will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks...

Find a used Asus V6800 Geforce DDR Deluxe 32 meg card, has video in video out , TV out.
Next would be ATI All In Wonder Radeon 32 DDR card.
Both of these would be excellent choices, but plan to spend more for the ATI. I owned the Asus card cause I could not afford the ATI card when it was released, and I did what your friend plans to do, it was a very good card and will last for a long time. Here is a link for the Asus card, you can probably search the net and find one new as well, I just sold mine.

If you want to read about the ATI try www.tomshardware.com there are reviews on both there.

No, don't do what Cisco said :)
If its a MiniDV cam it'll be firewire. So get a firewire card for the input(i think you already knew that)
Any card will be ok to actually do the editing, though a fast one is preferrable so you dont drop frames. (Radeon?)
You can always opt for a really expensive multimedia card, like those Oxygen ones, but if she's not professional, don't go for that, costs wayyyy too much.

thanks, I will compaire the Radeion to the Nvidia cards...
The MX400 will work just fine. I have used a firewire camera on my laptop which is a Macintosh with a ATI Rage 128 mobile 8meg video and it did great. The input from the firewire port it digital video. This setup works MUCH BETTER then a capture card becase the signal would have to go from digital to analog in the camera and then from analog back to digital in the capture card as you can immagine this leads to a substantial loss in quality. Just get a firewire card for the machine so you can do straight digital transfers and a video editing package if the camera didn't come with any software.

Sorry I overlooked Mini dv and was still thinking of camcorder! But you could still chooise aa Asus V6800 if you find one cheap and as you said grab a pci firewire card. It would work fine , correct me if I am wrong, always open to being educated, and ride on my bro!!

this is very minor but a nice finishing touch for helping out is the Ace 122d front bay here is the link and it has a firewire plug for the front too. comes in handy and well worth 18.50.
