View Full Version : Wierd fps went down after 2Kpro install , help
I got all the same drivers installed 20.81 detonator , 1432 4in1 and now my fps has gone down some. At default cpu setting I was getting 3dmark00 9250 , 3dmark01 4250 but now after 2k I'm getting 00-8550 01-3550. Anyone have this problem before I havnt updated yet an th MS site I suppose that could be the problem.
update - also in Q3 demo I was getting around 165fsp @16bit but know it more like 145fps.
Try installing Win2k Service Pack 2. It made a huge difference on my machine. Also, have you tried NvMax?
There's a good article on getting the thing tweaked here (http://g256.com/guides/geforce/)
See what it did for me below......
Good luck,
Doctor
Doc it still hurts :) , ya the servise pack didnt help my benchmarks at all.
I think the problem is my dual boot setup , I think its dual booting 2kpro/98 on the same partition? I've never used a partition so I dont know what to expect.
When you partition a drive do you get another C:drive like a E:drive or something? So if you patition a 20Gig drive into two 10's you would have something like this C:drive compacity-10.0G E:drive compacity-10.0G?
I did a clean install but my win98 OS and system files where all saved also but my C:drive has the same compacity but it oviously is filled with both setups so its more full. I guess I'll just have to do another clean install , what advanced setup change do I need to make to have 2kpro soley install on me HDD.
Bummer..............
I'm not sure that going to a Win2K-only systen is the answer, but if you would like to do it, here's how:
Back up all of your data you would like to keep!
Boot into DOS on a floppy, and go into FDISK. Delete all partitions, extended partitions, etc. Restart, and boot to the Win2K CD. It will ask you where you where you want to install it, and if you would like to make a new partition, and if you would like to use the entire drive. Tell it the first partition size you would like, and let it format it. I format all of mine as NTSF. Then format the rest of the drive partitions, as you like. After the installation you will have a C-drive, D-drive, and your CDrom as an E-drive. Install Service Pack 2, and go to "Windows Update" and install all of the needed updates. Make sure that you install all of the latest drivers, especially the nVidia, and your chipset ones.Install NVmax, and do all of the tweaks from the link I posted above. Defrag your drive!
Good luck, and let me know how you make out,
Doctor

If you are still going to duel boot when you do erase your partitons and format I suggest installing win98 first.(I believe thats your other OS??) If you want to use NTFS don't select use whole disk for 1st partition only use half the size of your disk (If you want an equal amount of disk space for each OS).Then after you make that partiton install win98 then follow the same steps as before but this time when you make your second partiton select use the rest of the disk space and format to NTFS and then install win2K.hope that helps

The windows 2000 operating system is built differently than 98se, ME or 95. Hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and go to "System Processes" or whatever the tab is. Look at the programs that are running in the background.
Much more than other OS' from Microsoft. One way is to look into W2K optimization guides, another is to be sure you have at least 256Meg of memory.
Either way. More CPU power is being used just running the OS than with others so your bound to see a fps decrease in games and benchmarks. Nothing is wrong..really! Stablility, and true plug and play compatability are the trade off's. 2000 is a great OS. You have to consider how much you really play games.
I still use 98se on 5 machines cause they run the Folding @ Home client faster (probably because of the same reasons) and I still game a fair amount. Good luck!

Alright thanks Doctor I got WIN98 completely removed (deleted the C:drive backup , removed the 98 BOOT.INI , and removed patition and reformatted HDD) and got a true clean install of W2Kpro. Did all my normal installs (drivers , games , programs) plus the service pack and anything else MS thought would be critical and I have good news.
default cpu (1.2) default video card (250/458)
WIN98
3dmark00-9250
3dmark01-4250
Q3demo@16bit-165fsp D#1
2Kpro
3dmark00-8850
3dmark01-4250
Q3demo@16bit-145fsp D#1
So a little improvement in 2000 and the same score in 2001 :)
but no improvement in Q3 demo  , I guess I'll take what I can get over all I'm happy with the setup.

If your happy, I'm happy! :p
BTW, did you install NVmax, and use the tweak guide here (http://g256.com/guides/geforce/) ?
It helped my scores alot!
Congrats!

No Doc the 21.81's make nVidia max goofy. I would like to adjust the W2Kpro/XP + Athlon fix but like I said nVidia max isnt operating properly.
Are you using 2Kpro and the 21.81 det. 4 drivers?
I just looked at you insignia WOW , 2K1-8255 must be at 16bit huh. Vapo cool man thats a pretty sweet case 1.4@1.76 with -9°C dang , can you put whatever chip you want in there or is it all sealed up , what kind of warrenty do you get on the case and its cooling components?

Ya, I'm using the 21.81's, and obviously they are working quite well:p, and NO, the 3DMark 2001 score of 8255 is at the default settings, 32bit:D.
The VapoChill case is basicly what allows me to get this beast clocked so high. It runs all day long at 1768mhz by keeping the CPU at -09C. High clock rates really help high frame rates.
If your interested in one of these monsters, you can read about them
here (http://www.vapochill.com/) and I bought mine here (http://www.minotaur.com/). You can put pretty much any socket type processor in it, and the warranty is 1 year.
Enjoy,
Doctor
