View Full Version : Swiftech MCP 600 Operating Voltage

What is the maximum operating voltage of this pump? I'm using the NexXxos XP and wonder if it is worth the effort to build a compact dc-dc converter. Would there be a marked improvement in cooling efficiency if I operate the pump at a higher voltage and what might that voltage be?

Typical operational range is around 10.0v - 14.9v.

Below 10.0v the DC motor inside stops spinning and the pump ceases to work at all.

At or above 15.0v the magnetic armature has a very high chance of magnetically decouple from the impeller, resulting in the motor spinning, but the impeller not spinning (i.e. the pump ceases to pump water). Under very carefully controlled conditions it is possible to get the pump up to 16.0v before magnetic decoupling pretty much always occurs.

14.0v is probably the "safest" over-voltage to run with. Above that and I'd say you're getting into serious pump life-span shortening territory, although I have no actual evidence to back that statement up, but rather is just a feeling. I could be totally wrong and it could kill the pump in a matter of months, but I don't think so as I've run an MCP600 here at 14.0v for about 6 months now without apparant problems.

Performance improvement depends on the radiator and waterblock in use, but somewhere around 0.3-0.6C would probably be a decent guideline of what to expect.
