View Full Version : 2.8c wont O/C over 3.3+ on 5:4...
I currently O/C my P4 2.8c to 3.1 max (before windows freezes) with PC3200 512 generic ram at 1:1. I decided to try 5:4 to see if it was my ram holding me back. After setting to 5:4, i raised MHZ up.If i change my MHZ above 230mhz windows freezes at logon. So i can get to logon and post here at about 230mhz with 5:4. WTF! I am only able to increase 2mhz before unstable freezing and this is with 5:4! AT 1:1 i could get up to 298mhz.... and changing to 4:5 i can only go 2mhz higher.
So its not my ram..what is the problem/thing holding me back? My Mobo is an MSI 865PE Neo2, with STOCK Voltages and Fan. Though RAM @ 2.8v.
I've sen people in this forum and around the net get form 2.8c to a tleast 3.5 stable on stock everything!

It could possibly be your motherboard. Two of my friends have the same motherboard and the agp/pci lock doesnt work properly, fried his fx5200. It could possibly be that? maybe a bios update? Try that. What stepping is your 2.8C btw?
might want to increase your CPU voltage.
seconded, what are your temps/cooling?

what voltage are u running?
if u are using stock cooling investment in a decent heatsink would go a long way as well
One thing you need to understand is that MSI just plain sucks, especially on the 865pe stuff. What is cheapest is rarely what is best.
Beyond that, it's a ram limitation. Changing ram may help, or you may find that the MSI mb is going to limit you at an unimpressive OC no matter what ram you throw at it. A good OC in 5:4 mode is a challenge with any 865/875 motherboard, but almost unheard of with a MSI.

I second that. But still lets try if we can get him a tad further. f1re; read larva's and my signature and look at our Voltages and settings and see if matching any of that gets you higher. I know the board is limiting you but most 2.8C's do at least around 3.4-ish...
Oh and forget about our RAM timings. Set at least something like 2.5-3-3-7 yourself!
