replacement mobo (intel mPGA 603)

Not much help at all in the intel mobo forum, thought i'd give a shot over here.

You will have to excuse my noobishness in the Intel arena. I have allways been an AMD user. I have a server at my workplace with a dead mobo. Now, my company does not want to spend the cash to replace this mainboard. The proc is a XEON 2.4 i believe. While it's a dual xeon mainboard it has only ever had one xeon installed. I don't think the developers using this machine will ever install a second proc. We are looking for a single socket board to replace this with. Is this even possible? I am ignorant of Intel proc / socket compatibility. Anyone have any advice here? Information provided will be greatly appreciated!!!

Singles are sort of uncommon and the 7500 chipsets are getting long in the tooth. You might want to try this board:

If you need SCSI, I'd go with the SHG2 and a simple controller.

It is a single socket xeon board nice brand, but quite pricey. Hope that helps.

Nice to speak with you again! I liked that first board, but there are no PCI slots. Optimized for 1 or 2U apps and a riser card. Our case for this server is extended ATX server desktop. I need some PCI!! The second option was good, but if i can cut down the cost by eliminating the scsi controller (we don't need it) that would be good. Man, i wish i knew a bit more about intel chipsets. Time to hit the books i reckon.

The SHG2 doesn't have one onboard. If you don't need one, then it should be fine for your needs. The ServerWorks chipsets aren't the fastest on the block, but are usually very stable. I have run more than a couple and still have an older one running a dual PIII-S at the house.

The SHG2s are discontinued by Intel, but will be the least expensive option for your needs. They will support your current processor and RegECC memory. The other cheaper boards tend to be I860 RAMBUS boards and that gets very expensive quickly.

Other options include 7500, 7501 and 7505 chipsets, as well as later chipsets for Xeons. The PCDL and other chipset 875P are available, but more expensive.
