I'm going to buy a Celeron CPU. Is it better to buy Retail box (+$15, fan/sink, warranty) or OEM? Is there quallity difference between the 2? I want to be able to o/c it of courese, so I need a good unit.

In the past, the retail box CPUs seemed to be a little better at overclocking. Some folks guessed it was because lots of venders were pre-testing the OEM CPUs in order to hand pick the best to sell at a higher price. The other good reason to buy retail is the much longer warranty.

Slim,

Retails are just a better and safer investment, I know you won't be using the stock HSF, but you can make them into interesting coolers for RAM and the like..also since you'll pay more Intel asks less questions about RMA and they are better overclockers, historically. I analogous instance would be buying a HD from a reputable dealer and paying a little more, or buying preferred stock instead of common shares.

The extra few bucks is worth the warranty.

Not for what we do. Do you really expect to keep the same CPU for more than a couple of months? If so, go with the longer warranty. If not, go OEM, slap a good HSF on, and see how far that puppy will go.

How long are the OEM warrantys?

If they are less than a year than I think its worth it for retail, because you can put your cpu in a folding box (:)) or go sell it on E-bay.
