I don't see to many movie threads here, so I hope this is alright, if not, feel free to delete this.

Saw Hostage last night (pretty good flick) - but before hand there was a trailer for Sin City... http://www.apple.com/trailers/miramax/sin_city/

Have you ever seen so many stars in one movie? I hadn't heard anything about this movie until I saw the preview, so either I'm living under a rock, or they're keeping things relatively quiet. It didn't look too bad - very interesting, HEAVY use of black and white and looked very dark and styled.

Just wondering if any of you had seen it, and what your thoughts on it were. Also did you all like Hostage?

The cinematography looks amazing in the movie based on the trailer. Also, Frank Miller oversaw the entire thing so you can be SURE it will be true to the comics (also QT directed a scene or two). Like you said there are TONS of stars in the movie including Clive Owen, Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Elijah Wood, Bruce Willis, and the list goes on.

If I were to see only two movies this year, they'd be Star Wars Episode III Revenge of the Sith and Sin City. I hope both are what I expect them to be and MORE.

Saw the trailer on the other day on TV. Looked very star studed and very good to me... Looks kind of like a 1930's/kind of modern thing dectivie type film.

Kind of like a max payne type deal.

The use of black and whilte and the little color looks really good.

That's good. I always enjoyed big celebrity movies like Ocean's 11 (the new version). Not exactly deep or moving material, but it's a lot of fun.

They've been showing TV spots for it on Spike during MXC. It looks fantastic! Very Film Noir. :)

Yes indeed, "Max Payne-like" is a very good way to put it, although I'm not familiar with the comic it's apparently based off of.

the comic that It is based off of is a masterpiece. Its really well written. When i first heard about this i was all excited. then daredevil came out and it was horrible compared to that mini epic Daredevil and Elektra that took place in the Daredevil comics. If you are into comics get the daredevil/elektra graphic novel and you will see what i mean.

Now that I see that Frank Miller was involved I'm excited again.

I can never understand how they mess up comic book movies. the script is already written!!!! WITH PICTURES!! sheesh.

I can only hope they get batman right this time.

I would not be suprised if sin city was an inspiration for Max Payne in one way or another

I'm pretty sure Sin City had some sort of influence on Max Payne. The feel is all over the place, not to mention the graphic novel cut scenes.
I started getting Sin City when it first came out, and kept up with it religiously for at least a couple of years. I was so completely amazed at how much Micky Rourke looks like Marv.
The use of black and white in the comic was just amazing, I mean Frank Miller didn't actually draw a picture, he literally painted it with shadows. Any of you that have the books, go back and take a look, nearly every detail is implied through shadow rather than drawn with line.
It's simply amazing!
I've got high hopes for this movie, but am still worried. Just because Frank was involved doesn't mean it'll turn out good. He did direct Robocop 2 if I recall correctly (if not let me know,) and we all know how that one turned out. Granted he does have a vested interest in this one turning out much better seeing as how it's his world and characters they're portraying.

oh god! based on a comic :( another one. Just watched Constantine, Hell Boy, Witchblade, Daredevil, AvP and a whole load of other god awful comic book adaptation s**** they all suck (except for XMEN and BLADE) wooden acting, bad direction, awful looking and none of them feel 'grounded' in the real world. e.g LOTHR was a fantasy, but within the fantasy world the characters actions and lines were believable, if you do fantasy, it still has to feel real.

This is not a wholly deep observation, but OH MY GOD! Jessica Alba and Alexis Bledel are friggin' HOT in this movie. I was just going to say that the style reminds of me of QT, but someone already made that observation.

By the way, know where I can find an actual download link? (not online buffering stuff)

I thought the same thing, but didn't feel like posting it ;) As for the direct download I haven't really found one on an actual site, short of a torrent or something.

I thought it was amazing. It looks exactly like a comic book while you are watching it. The sutle use of color makes all the better to. Also i found it having 3 stories maid it interesting because they all were loosely tied together.

The movie has a little bit for everybody. Fast cars, good looking men and women, guns, dicapitations, dismembered limbs, Jessica Alba as a stripper who doesn't strip, Clive Owen, Bruce Willis, Alexis Bledel, Alexis Bledel, Alexis Bledel, Alexis Bledel, Alexis Bledel, Alexis Bledel, Alexis Bledel, Alexis Bledel, Alexis Bledel, Alexis Bledel, Alexis Bledel, Alexis Bledel, Alexis Bledel, ....

i just saw it and it was pretty good. kinda lost interest after the 2nd story, but overall it was a good movie. the only part i didnt get was who josh hartnett's character was and how he was in the beggining and the end. btw, did you know that frank miller played the priest that was shot in the second story? very funny and very cool movie.

I saw Sin City last night. It was amazing. It is incredibly intense. It wears you out. :p I never read the comics, but I was told it followed very closely to the comics by a couple of friends who read them. I say the movie is worth your money if you are into the comics or not.

I just got back from seeing it.

It was great.

It was insanely original but the large amout of tits bugged me. Why did they have to be there? I mean, once, maybe, but through the whole movie? Please...

Annoying is what it was. It's like putting a shiny thing in front of a ****** (excuse my example :D), they are attracted to it. Bleh, I guess they get more money that way .

That was one of the only flaws I saw though. It fit the genre and comic book style perfect. It had many anime features to it too (which I'm sure many of you here can appreciate), that I certainly liked. It was definitly an adult movie... lol. Don't take your kids to see it. Like said above, it was intense. Though, some animes I've seen (Dead Leaves) have out done it.

and if i die....meh. it would suck, but personally i wouldn't care. i'd just be sad that everyone else ( my family, and friends ) would be sad and miss me.

but i just said that in the heat of anger. i don't hope he dies. just gets fired, or smaked around or something. they will play ice princess, which won't bring in nearly as much money as sin city, yet cinemark still decides to not play it anywhere.

check cinemark.com. on the left, if you look at weekend grosses. Sin City isn't shown at all. none of their theaters are playing it at all.

whatever, their loss of money. stupid managers.....

It's like Max Payne 3!! But even better, the characters were all amazing, and the cinematography is everything it's hyped up to be and more. Oh and the violence, the sweet gore and fight scenes are better than anything you've seen before. Think Kill Bill 1's Uma vs Crazy 88 spread over 2+ hours. Then add guns and 3 virtually indestructable men, expect a trail of destruction.

The movie is nearly shot-for-shot pulled straight from the Sin City graphic novels, and the dialouge is 100% from the comic (at least that's what I've been told). It had notihing to do with marketing or pleasing the audience. The books have been around for ages and what you see is what you get.

I agree the cinematography was great, but Rodreguez kind of cheated when he had some of the worlds greatest storyboards in hand to guide the shots :) I mean, Frank Miller came up with the scenes and put them to paper.

Still, great adaptation of the comics, great look and feel. Very stylized. And I think you people are crazy to obsess the blue eyed girl. For me it's all about Rosario Dawson. Gotta have some flavor and some and meat on dem bones, thick lips, full figure, 'bad girl'. One of my friends used to love Katie Holmes, she reminds me of the blue eyed girl, all homely and girl next door-ish. Neither one does a thing for me, like 6/10...just above average.

**SPOILER ALERT**

For the guy who didn't get Josh Hartnet's character, he was a bookend. The movie opens and closes with the charming hitman. With the girl meeting him in the elevator at the end we are left knowing that she's done for, an echo of the opening scene of the movie. We know he's doing what he was doing in the begining. No magic elixer was found to make the world right in this movie - Sin City is still dirty and mean despite the 'justice' handed out to the 'bad guys'. Pure film noir, with the tragic endings and injustice handed out to the 'good guys' (who are never really good, except maybe Bruce Willis' character), powerful, seductive 'bad girl' type women, and weak minded men succumbing to their charms.

And yes, I'm a film student :D

Just be glad that you don't have to drive 2 hours to see it. The nearest theater in town is showing some crappy family movie. And that's all, since they only have one screen. :eh?:

And then after you've driven 2 hours you have to find someone to buy you tickets. Before you yell at me for suggesting something illegal, know that the ratings system is voluntarily enforced by the theater, not regulated by laws. Sure, three-year-olds shouldn't see it, but if I'm almost 18 then it should be just fine. It isn't like the day I turn 18 something goes "BOOM" that lets me suddenly view violent movies without going insane or something. I've got the internet, I've already seen everything there is to see and read everything there is to read in that regard. I'm going to end up watching it one way or another, we'll probably end up watching it at the house, without paying $20 for tickets and food and having to listen to annoying people in the audience and whatnot. Like you said, their loss.

The reason that Sin City and Max Payne are so similar is because they both tap into the feel of those hard boiled detective novels of the 1930's. This is the basic formula for that genre:

The detective is usually a loner, with no apparent family, few if any friends, and no stable romantic attachments.

The novels are set in alienated, urban settings.

The novels often suggest a pervading sense of corruption throughout society, so much so that the work of the detective in pursuit of justice often seems futile.

The novels often display a marked class consciousness, reflecting the influence of the Depression.

The detectives often seem as much victims of circumstances themselves as master sleuths solving crimes and restoring order.

The novels are interested in psychology, often pathological psychology, thus reflecting the influence of psychoanalysis.

The novels are often marked by misogyny (hatred of women) and homophobia. As with film noir, there is often a pervasive fear of sexuality and anxiety that seems to be linked to the changing roles of men and women in society.

The language is marked by wise-cracks and the use of contemporary slang. Characters often talk around a point while the real subject of the conversation remains unsaid.

I thought Sin City was pretty good but it was such a straight adaptation that I kind of felt I'd been there before (and I had since I'd read the comics).

I'm most familiar with the story (I think its called) A Dame to Die For. Anyway, its the one with Marvin (Mickey Rourke) and Cardinal Rourke (Rutger Hauer). Not only was the dialogue 99% the same as the book but the shots were set up 99% the same. I wouldn't have minded some variation just to make it fresh. On the other hand, its way too easy to lose the feel of a story with some director's flimflammery.

I guess it was pretty good.

Re:the tit thing - Just so you know, Samuraisam, there wasn't any extra nudity thrown in by some cynical LA ad hack. In fact there was a little less than in the comic book since J. Alba never came through. For the most part I thought it was done with a purpose.

Permanoob
04-19-05, 02:34 PM
Yah Jessica Alba declined the nudity to the tune of something about not wanting her dad to see the movie if she was topless. And the boobies weren't gratuitous at all.

<3 <3 <3 Carla Gugino though, thank you Mr. Rodriguez... THANK YOU.
