View Full Version : Think you have a Bad @ss OC?
Ok. This is my little Quake stress test creation. Basically, I record myself playing a short round with I think 11 bots using Excessive weapons mod. This mod kills any wimpy system. I put it in a demo cycle loop. I thought I had a rock stable OC, 1.2 @ 1425 (150x9.5). I mean Prime95 ran for hours and hours w/o a hitch, Sandra burn-in same, Seti same. But when I ran this demo loop, my system craps out in less then a minute. After several bumping downs, I finally had it running the demo stable @ 1.305 Ghz!! 145x9. Yikes!!!
Instruction:
- unzip the Q3stress.zip to THE DRIVE where Quake is installed
- launch Quake3
- goto console (type the ~) key
- type "timedemo 1"
- type "exec democycle.cfg"
Stand back and enjoy

hehe got a headache just watching it loop through once so walked away and let it run for about 15 mins .... it was still cycling when i came back :)

That's pretty good. I also had to bump my GF2 MX memory speed down from 205 to 195 to get stable..

Hey Would, I used the term "bad @ss" just as an expression, to mean "rock stable". I don't have the need to impress anyone. I just thought I had a decent OC, but apparently it puked when I ran this demo. I wanted to post it here to see if anyone run into the same thing.

Hey Would, I think that avatar of yours is starting to mess with your mind... :D
Alex99, what version of Q3 did you use when making that demo? I have V1.17 and the demo won't play. Also, I've never seen the dm_66 extension on a demo before. All mine end in .dm3. I guess I'm missing something about how this works.
Is it enough to just dl the demo version of Q3??

Sorry for the delay in responding. I used version 1.29h, although the latest version (1.30) should work too.

I doubt the demo will work, You'll need the full version with the latest patch.

That is really not a good way to test a stable oveclock. Prime and SiSandra and all that put you cpu under load and heat it up. Yes the Q3 test stresses the cpu, but that is a video card test not a cpu, you can leave the same cpu dpeed and lower the video card sped and run it fine. If your system crahses in that demo its a video card issue more than a cpu issue
Just to cover all the bases, run the Q3 stress test in a loop with Prime95, Sandra and UT in the background. And anything else that runs nicely in the background. That should be a good stability test :)

That's exactly what I thought too. But consider this, when I lower my CPU speed from 1425 to 1305, the demoloop runs fine. I did not touch the video card speeds. I tried under clocking my video core and memory speed below the default, but left my CPU speed at 1425, the demoloop crashes.

I think if you run Linux, you might get by. But Windows will get totally confused if you do that :)

Well, you *did* lower your OC by lowering the FSB. That does, after all, overclock your video card. Might very well be that it's not stable at that bus speed.

the way I see as long as your system doesnt crash when your working on it that means its stable=]
in real life you hardly use half the cpu at a time so why loose a great overclock to one program that was meant to "kill" your video card

Where do I unzip the files to I can't seem to find a place in the Q3A dir that it will work. Sorry I don't have that mod either maybe I need it. I'm new to quake.

Unzip to the drive where you installed Quake3. If you install Quake3 to C drive, just choose the root of C to unzip to, assuming you installed Quake3 to C:\Quake3. You need the full version of Quake3 with the latest patch (1.30).

I have 1.29 grrr time to have to lag at file planet.

1.29h is what I had when I created the demo. It should work. I haven't tested it with 1.30.

Well what dir inside of the quake folder does it need to be in?
It needs to be in the baseq3\demos folder. If you don't have a demos folder, make one.

Thank you
My rig ate through that demo like warm apple pie! ^_^. It lagged a little bit, because I don't have my VC overclocked, but not too much, and not enough to affect gameplay, in my opinion.

I ran it but couldn't get a fips rate off of it worth anything I think I got 39 fps...Most of the time I get something like 59fps. Plus it didn't run as fast as the normal timedemo does it was close to half of that speed. Does that mean that my vid card can't take it?
Can someone give me a good link to get mods from other than file planet they suck.
