I been reading in a couple of posts that w2k doesn't behave on an overclocked machine, is this true?

Not really. If it isn't behaving for people, then chances are their overclock is making their system unstable.

I'm using win2k... and it does tolerate my tweaking....
I am also using win 2k on 2 machines, both overclocked quite a bit and both stable.

No probs to run Win2K on an overclocked machine as long as all of the hardware work well together and support the load. I personnally oced my P///650E@911 and everything is working perfectly, you just have to check the temps and cool the all thing as best as you can !
Good luck !
Win2K does not know the difference between a factory 1000 mhz Tbird and an 800 Mhz Tbird OC to 1000 mhz. If your hardware runs stable then Win2K will not complain. Many peopl think that if the system boots then it is stable but that is not the case. The system must be able to run hard without crashing....try some of the burn in/bench mark programs like Prime 95 to see if you system is really stable.

I agree with the "stable if boots",,Not.
The torture test in Prime is what I run to test stability/burn, along with other programs.

How long do you need to ryn prime95 in order to conclude that ur syatem is stable? I've run prime95 for 3 hours while doing other normal stuff and had not any problems... but when I play Max Payne later..., I experience lock-ups....:(

Me personally, I run the "torture test" for around an hour or until it completes a couple of tasks.
I also run 3Dmark2001 to test for stability of the fsb and cpu.
Do you run Mad Onion's 3DMark 2000 or 2001 for testing?

I hear the "folding" stuff is good too..

Havent had a single porblem OCing in an NT system (2K,XP)
or a 9X system....
AAre you sure you are 100% stable in 9X when you can get a higher speed?
Try to crash you computer... that is also another good way to test how stable you really are
If you are running win2k and it is unstable running certain applications you may have damaged data. Try booting to the win2k install cd and running the repair. If it gets better for awhile and then becomes unstable again you might try a fresh install. This happened to me once when I ran my bus speed a little too high. Good luck

As you can tell from my sig I am still on 98se waiting on w2k in the mail.
I am getting all the info I can on w2k before installation.
In a couple of threads in this forum it was mentioned that w2k got unstable when overclocking. I wanted to have this doubt answered before I went through the work of format and installation of w2k.
ThanX

Well if you are 100% stable (not 98.7% or what ever) you will be fine. So just keep on stress testing your CPU till you know for a fact it is 100% stable, and 2K will not give you any troubles....
note
It is not recomended to install an OS on a OCd system...
although i'll do it as long as MY PCI speeds are in spec

Yeah, also ran those apps... I also play lots of Quake and CS. I always have not any problems running 3Dmark... always finishes the benchmarks...
Hey Guy's where can I get prime 95? I'd just like to check it out.
Thanks, Derek

What is Prime95? I use SiSoft Sandra to burn-in. Also I noticed you have W2K on both your systems. I have an OEM version of W2K,installed it , worked great for 2 weeks, then did not like a driver I installed and would not boot. I could not even go into safe mode. I had to reformat, so I went back to ME. Also the NTFS file system is slower than the FAT32 system (although a lot more stabler). Is it actually slower? I did not have it long enough to do any benchmarks, but I am thinking of going back to it for the stability and possibly fo speed (if there is any). Can you give me your input on Win2K. Thanks
Abb
I really like win2k. i have to use ntfs because i do video editing and all 32 bit os's like (win98) have a 3.99gb limitition for video.
I have'nt had any stability problems but some older hardware does not have drivers available. Also some older programs will not run in win2k. If you have fairly new hardware you should'nt have any problems. As far as win2k being slower, it does seem to boot slower, ( there are ways to speed this up) And I have heard some people say it's faster. I personally dont know, the only machine I ever had with win 98 was a pentium 3 450 and so naturally it was much slower than my current setup.
As far as your question about prime 95, I have'nt run it yet so maybe someone else can help you better than I can.
Good luck, Derek

here's a link about the latest about prime95.... click here (http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm)
I'm running win2k on FAT32 on my PC's since I occasionally run winME ( had to dual boot )... I have an old Canon Fax/Scanner that only have a driver for ME and not win2k on a seperate drive ( old WD HDD ).
So far so good, I have not encountered problems ( not before SP-2 ), specially on the games that I'm playing... this may vary from system to system, I know a friend of mine who switched back to ME since he cant get his games to run fast and stable on win2k... I just make sure that all my drivers are win2k compatible....
