I have directed dragongoddess to this thread. There will have to be guidelines set as to the type and duration of the contest. I doubt that it will be a team aginst team all out grudge match. It will probable be something like our ww4 contest. good thing thats over.

I doubt that this would be a team against team thing as we do outproduce them by a wide margin. I would assume it will be some kind of subteam. Maybe start from zero and see how many you can add? Not sure. I'm sure we can get the rules ironed out in the comming days/weeks.

Its not a team vs team thing in one sense. Each Team will create a sub team of members who want to compete in the gauntlet. These sub-teams will compete against each other for a period of time say 30 days. Each sub-team will start from zero and the team with the most points at the end of the time period wins.

Well you start from nothing. You pick a name for your team and start a thread asking people to sign up for the gauntlet. These names are then used by the stats person to pull their stats from Stanford so we can see how each other is doing and keep score.
Seems a little shaky. Seven, what say you?
It seems like that is something that would be easy for Christolph to do since he already has the monitoring program up for WW4............ if he would approve, I think that would be the easiest way of monitoring the two teams in the race.

Enough of this constent name-swapping on the borgs. I don't know about you guys, but some of my borgs are a massive pain to get acess to, to change the name. I mean, people are all for letting their computer fold, but as long as they don't have to do anything (I tend to trade minor computer repair jobs for folding rights). Why not just let everyone use their usernames and you just pull the #'s from there?
Well, spring break isn't for two weeks for me........... and for other people they just got done with their spring break, so I'd imagine that most of the people will be on hand to race.

Thats how I understand it. The stats are pulled by username from Stanford.

It would rather be for "The Red Army" of team 32. It would consist of new borgs of course, not transferred ones. If you have your borgs under a 32 name already, just keep em folding. Better off not having to deal with the hassle.

dragon- He means that he doesn't want to change his user names. Just put all of the power from individual subteams and say you want it put into one bigger subteam. Might be a little triky from the programer to do, but probably doable. This is a problem we had with WW4, people didn't want to do it because they would loose their rankings in the bigger picture.

Hey, I like this idea. It's a pain to go round changing details on my network.
If it could be arranged to have one web ling for team 32 and one for TR where you'd simply enter your folding name in this would be great. Noone would lose any positions.
I for one am not in a position to add any new borgs, and I discovered in WW4 how much of a pain it is to change the username on every client.

I can only promote folders as high as Lieutenant General. Since I'm only a Colonel General myself, to attain my rank or higher (Marshal) you need to approach Generalissimo Seven.
Don't forget that all officers are required to wear shoulder boards (for their avatar). Only Generalissimo Seven is excepted and may choose whether or not he uses his or not.
Privates may use shoulder boards if they wish, but it is not compulsory. I strongly urge everyone to wear there shoulderboards though.

This is one of the reasons our user count appears to be lower than ocau and the [H]- a lot of people are in subteams already with a lot of other people. He just wants a way for those subteams (or individual's for that matter) be able to just say they want to be in the race without changing their name, just to be added into the lump total points.

Nah, you could be fired. Just do what I did. Tell your boss was folding actually does (cure for cancer etc) and let him know that it won't actually slow any of the computers down as it's just using spare CPU cycles.
Don't make yourself a liar by doing somethign stupid like loading it on systems with only 128MB RAM. Not having enough RAM and forcing systems to use virtual RAM will slow them down fairly noticably.
Try to skate around questions like additional power useage and added heat. Also try to convince them that most issues come from starting and restarting computers so they should be left running 24/7. That one is actually prety true....

I like the general idea of just letting others fold under existing names, the only problem being if they were on a subteam. Then the whole team would be added, which is usually several people. The leader of that sub team would have to get approval of everyone folding for that team to participate, I guess.

This is the main reason why I didn't give full support for WW4. I cannot be screwing around with the configs of my borgs or else my boss will just pull the plug on the entire thing... and that would be bad for everyone. Same usernames or else I will not be able to help much...

Oh, and set the CPU usage down to... 80%, say.
That should make no noticeable lag in anything you work with in the first place.. and your boss might actually like the thought of his PCs lives being expanded by constantly running the CPU at a steady temp. instead of it being hot and cold... and eventually cracking from the constant expansion and contraction.

two ways I can see this going down.
1) create a sub-team name under your respective team and its new borgs and machines you have access to. Its a major hassle to get to some of my borgs and i'm sure others feel the same way. this would generate points for folding as a whole and new potential folders for the teams. the sub-team would start at 0 on april first.
2) this is a little more difficult.
Each team has a signup of people willing to enter the contest. Someone (Christoph maybe since he is an awsome programmer) can keep a running count of the names of each person willing to compete from each team. On the eve of the contest he adds up the totals of all the people from each team competeing and SUBTRACTS that from 0 and that's where each team starts. This way the totals accumulated before the contest are canceled out and its ONLY THE PRODUCTION during the contest that actually counts to the victory. At the end of the contest all totals are counted up (remember starting totals are subtracted so only the numbers produced are actually counted) and the highest team totals are declaired the winner.

Nobody is allowed to enter after the start of the contest unless they want to fold for a user name already in the contest ( I see no real way to stop this from happening so we might as well make it legal)
all teams agree on a stats page to pull from and the start and stop time.
I can see either of those working. Plus each team would not have an idea of how many actually enter. The people entering would have to put their names in a thread so theres no "our whole team enters" stuff.

Perhaps you could be a Privateer for the USSR. Secretly in league with the USSR but sailing under the flag of a Corsair.
Is it possible to simply automate this by having a server running somewhere with two web pages for subscibing to a particular team. Then every hour the server pulls the stats on the users who have subscribed to each team, adds them together and makes a graph similar to the one in WW4.
This would allow those of us who don't have access to other machines to borg, but have existing machines to participate. Otherwise I myself can't participate.....

I like that idea. We also don't lose out on production. This was a big issue for me during WW4.

What a challange - can't be having greater production all the time considered a win here? There's nothing more to prove there, just borg more to increase overall team PPD.

LOTS of people under PMSFishy and Seven, to prove which side was better at folding, Intel or AMD, respectively.
I guess I'm not being very clear. I'm not asking anyone to make changes. If you have sub teams thats fine. If you form a bunch of subteams to compete thats even better. All thats needed is a name so the stats guy can pull the subteams name/points info from Stanford so we can keep track of the points. So whomever wants to play be they a sub team or a grouchy old woman just needs to have their name on a roster so the stats guy can do his thing.
BTW MarcC our stats guy has said he would do the stats for us. He just needs a roster. So who here will be incharge of the roster?

TR already wants to run team to team for a month. that might work well for the teams around them that are closer in production and can win/loose by ramping up but given that fact that we outproduce the closest of the teams in the challenge by 100,000 per day. thats not really a challenge.

yes you outproduce us by 100,000 ppd but if only 20 members of your team decide to compete then your margin disappears. This is not the entire team of TER and TR and overclockers.com against each other. Its just those on each team that want to compete.

Don't confuse I.M.O.G.'s hospitality with your ignorance. You being born before the advent of the abacus doesn't justify your lack of addition skills. If you still don't understand (and I doubt you do), allow me to spell it out for you. I.M.O.G's suggestion for a % increase would act as a handicap in your favor - determining a race by sheer points alone would end the competition before it began.
Cross reference Team 32's top folding names with the names that have responded here thus far. That list in itself should be more that enough to crush you and your little team.
Speaking of which, go and start a thread at TER to gain support for your cause. For a forum that has just declared an inter-team challenge against a superior team, it seems a little quiet. Are you sure you're the right one to speak for the rest of 14? Garner up support at your home forum, let's see who else speaks for 14 besides a trash-talking old granny.

I've not seen any posts from the dragongoddess so I'm not sure where this is going. So far I think the best option for this contest is member enter under their name and we keep a running total. No renaming. and your personal folding totals get the credit. This option was liked on other forums as well. We have christoph (if willing) and dragongoddess has a programmer as well.
Weekends are big Yardsale days. I'm sure once the dragongoddess is done yardsaling or antiquing or whatever it is dragongoddesses do on the weekends we will hear from her.
If we as a team want to do this I have accounts on all of the teams named and would be willing to put forth rules, dates and whatever to see if there is continued intrest.

Some sort of handicap should be put on Team 32, say a 33% inhibitory handicap on 32, or a 50% boost for teams 14 and 2630, to match current output trends.
Then threads should be be started in each team forum, where users of their respective teams should reply with a short message to state their interest in participating. If they reply, they make the team roster. The first post should contain an updated roster. The thread shouldn't be bloated with crap - only a short statement like "i'm in" or "folding name: _______".
Those 3 rosters from 32, 14, and 2630 should then compete against each other.
These rosters should not be fixed once the competition begins. If a team is getting whooped, they should have the right to call on more of their teammates to join the effort and catch up in the points.
This'll work to even the score a bit, because 1) it won't involve 100% of the team, only those active folders who are active in the forums, 2) it compensates for the point difference between the ranking teams, 3) it'll work towards bringing old folders back to the forum or new folders into the folding scene.
The only problem I forsee is the roster list. ONE source has to maintain a real-time master list of 3 teams, compile point totals, and compare them against each other. That's going to be a programming pain in the ass in terms of reliability and anti-cheating. We'll see.
we would have to hear from one of the programmers to make sure that this is possible, Handicap would work for me.

LOL we can slay that dragon using straws and toothpicks =) Defeating those teams is 100% ordained, so in order to give them a sort of fighting spirit, they need a stand a chance against us, i.e. institute a handicap.

The roster will be composed of only folding names registered with stanford - our subteams are just multiple people using the same name and with stanford.
We will have ourselves organized by April 1st, but your hopes of getting all of the top ten organized by then are hopeless.

After checking with the stats guy we are going to use subteams. at least 1 team needs to be entered. There is no limit on subteams. This will allow for competition within a team and with other teams.

I would like to keep a copy of the roster here so the stats guy can keep up.

If you expect to get this going by April 1st, you need to get all your ducks in a row. Doing it by subteam means people will have to change their usernames, which many people will not want to do. Thus, it makes the roster you asked us to create obsolete.
Are you sure this is the route we will take?
She posted that in our signup thread.... strange she put it there instead of here.
But that's because she thinks she has to have a stats guy on Ars Technica do it. When we have Christoph, who can easily whip up a better solution where we wouldn't have to shuffle power.

I would like to hear, from christoph or someone else, how difficult would it be to write a script which will parse the pages of each member on a roster that each team creates?
If its that much harder than we shouldn't do it, but it should be simple, as it should be as simple as appending the username to "http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=userpage&username=" and parsing the page then doing a simple math calculation to obtain the totals.

I wouldn't think that would be too hard (of course I haven't done much programming lately because of school) to do something like that. However, if a user has contributed to more than one team, there may be a problem. You would either use their total points for every team or find a way to just get the points that they have contributed to Team 32. Other than that, since all the pages are the same, I wouldn't think it would be that hard.

okay now, im just confuzed.
1. we dont change our username?
2. dragonlady has delagated responsibility in her absence. will it work?
3. we can fold for fishy's " NOT WW5" which is one in the same as defending against dragonlady's war?
