Greetings!

I have a PIII 800E, and I can't get it to run at over 920. I believe the bottleneck must be the processor, because I used to run the same setup with a 600E @ 900 before. (standard voltage, heatsink, no problems)

What I would really like to know, is anyone here has been in the same situation, and how much they have gained from changing the cooling?
I would really like to get it to run at 133fsb, so that I could have my pci-buss at a normal level.

Thanks in advance!

PIII 800E @ 920
Asus P3bf (latest bios)
256mb Kingston cas2 ram
matrox g-400 dh
seagate barracuda hd

Some procs are more stubborn than others. Sometimes you need better cooling and a little more voltage. Then again, there are a few procs that are just plain dogs. I'd try reinstalling the heatsink once more and double checking all the basics. What are your CPU load temps? Remember, your old 600 and the new 800 are basically the same chip except for the multiplier, maybe the only difference being the stepping version. Lots of people in the past had trouble overclocking those 800 CPUs up to 133 FSB.

The temps don't rise very much on this one... My old 600E would be around 20 degreese hotter. I'll have to check how high they go when I get home. I do understand that it's just about the same chip, and accept that this can be a bitch to O/c.

Still I would like to know how much higher people have usually gotten with a good heatsink / fan.

There is a shop here in finland that sells good heatsinks, and fans, there is plenty of choise, and just about all that have done well here in the tests are represented... I'll post the temps, and maby someone will have an idea on how much can be done :)

Try decreasing case overal temperature. If not posisible, try ducting some air from outside the case to the HSF from the CPU.

If with that you can't get a better oc, try raising the Vcore a little. My first PIII (a 550E) could reach 140 MHz in the FSB at stock Voltage, but my 850E is running at 115 MHz at 2 V.

This usually happen to chips of the same stepping, being the difference the silicon with they were made.

Good luck

Hi dropadrop, welcome to the Forum,
First of all I suggest you to monitor your system temps with MotherBoardMonitor that you can found at http://mbm.livewiredev.com/ never your chip must go over 45 degree C @full load OCed, and less is better.
The average clock speed of your chip, into the Cpu DataBase, is around 990Mhz, but there are many others freq., and more depends by the stepping revision, infact there are P/// 800Mhz cB0, cC0 and cC0. To check what kind of chip you've use Sisoft Sandra or Cpu-Z that you can found at http://cpuid.com
If you are thinking to replace your Cpu cooler, forget any kind of Thermaltake, aren't good for the OC think!, and remember always a very thin layer of thermal paste on the Cpu Core.

I hope it helps you ;)

I have exactly the same problem with my PIII 650:(

It'll go to 130MHz FSB with no probs, but any higher... forget it.

Suggested cooling:

Thermoengine V60-4225 - a little noisy, but great cooling!

Ok!

I checked the temps... It rises to around 45 degrees with the case closed, and around 38 with the case and window open. (It's cold in finland...)

I still have the standard cooling on it, but I have tried slowing down the memory, and raising the voltage. Nothing really makes a diferance. It usually does'nt even boot faster then 920. I managed to boot it at 960 twice, but even now opening the case did'nt make any diferance.

I checked at the local retail shop for cooling, and it seems that for the moment the only slot 1 cooler they have in stock is an Alpha PEP66T. I imagine it should be pretty good though... I guess the only way to find out is to try?

Mika :)

Forgot to mention... It is completly stable at 920. I can run photoshop or nuendo with high loads, and no problems... That's another thing that makes me wonder. I would imagine that it would even boot, and be unstable at the next higher speed then a stable one.

If you are using a P/// 800E Slot1 the best cooler to go is the Alpha P3125 or the Globalwin Vos32, but if you're using a Fcpga chip on the Slotket (the adapter for Slot1 to socket 370) the best is the Alpha Pep66.

I hope it helps you ;)

Hi!

Here's the processor info:
stepping: cB0
plant: Philippines
scode: SL457

At what voltage are you running now?

If you are running 45°C you really need some good cooling. Try increasing the air flow into/out from the case with addicional fan in the case. If the air inside the case is hot then, even if you get a better cooler, you won't see more stability from your CPU.

Mine is stable slot1@118FSB=>945Mhz on be6-ii though need more cooling at higher speed.

Well, you're using a P/// 800E Slot 1 cB0, not the best chip stepping revision, but always a good chip, probably needs only of more cooling, so I suggest you to add some case fan, and if still not enough to go @133Mhz of Fsb, replace the Cpu Cooler with a GlobalWin Vos32, or the great, but expensive, Alpha P3125.

I hope it helps you :)

Thanks!

You have all been very friendly! When I manage to get adequate cooling, I will post how it's going!

I think I figured out what the problem was... I just changed mobo and processor, and it would'nt even boot with my old powersupply! I changed it and all is fine. Too bad I won't have the chance to test the limits of that old processor...

Hi dropadrop,
What's your current system, and how many Watts was your old Power Supply?

Got it up to almost 1 GHz now...

Really Good orangjerteh
I suppose that you've improved the cooling section, what are you using now?
