I currently have the geforce 2 gts and looking to buy the geforce 3. There are many brands out there using the geforce 3 chip. Beside the cost, are there any difference in buying, for example, PNY or Vision Tek as opposed to ELSA?

Also any options on the Redeon 8500 card that will be out in less than a month? Is this the Geforce 3 killer???

Most of these cards are basicly the same just differnt options software bundles and heatsink setups.Although there is one I've heard you should stay away from can't remember what one though ..guys??

I also should mention if your looking to overclock it some come stock as great overclockers but then again modding is so much more fun.:D

Boonmar..the above post's are fairly accurate. Another major difference between some vendors is the type and speed of the memory they use on the card. Video output offerings are another thing to look into as well.

When you start looking in to brands. Get into detail w/ the hardware differences. Look at the memory type and speed. By speed I mean the access time of the memory.

With most GeForce 3's the memory is already covered by heatsinks. If you read reviews, Anandtech (http://www.anandtech.com/) is a good place to start, you can usually find out what the access time is. Usually written like this TC-4, TC-5, TC-6. The lower the number, the better the memory.

Hope this helps.

Isn't it obvious that machine's install of MDK2 has FPS capped at 157? A GeForce2 Ultra is capable of far more then that, and a GF3, with all the goodies off, could almost double that.

A GeForce2 GTS at the same level of performance as a GeForce3? Pishaw, and hoo-hah. The FPS is just capped at 157.

What purpose does capping a game off serve?I've never heard of that.it doesn't make sense that they wouldn't allow you more FPS even though after about 50 any more are just useless to the human eye...

Capping off FPS makes the frames that are rendered that much smoother, and flow together better. And yes, you can see more then 50FPS. You can see alot more. I don't know the exact number, but if you look at a game running at 80FPS, versus another running at 150+ FPS, you can see a difference.

Look at that graph that Funky provided. Look at the resolution. The GF3 really comes alive at the higher resolutions. The Ultra is a great card, but at high resolutions, the GF3 leaves it in the dust. I've seen one review of the new Radeon 8500. The GF3 still has an edge in most of the benchmarks. The conclusion was that new nVida drivers still being developed will probably keep the GF3 ahead of the 8500.
