Updated info is what is not in quotes.
Well I was going to do a review on this psu I just got, just to let people know what I thought of it's initial build quality. And I thought it was gonna be a positive one till this afternoon. I will post the details below.
Installed the psu minutes after I got it, initial voltages from mbm were good except the 12v was somewhat high, and I didnt have a new battery for my dmm as it is not easy to obtain in this small town. I thought it was alright though, as my antec was high according to it as well, but a meter suggested it(the antec) was right on the money. After a day or so of playing games and doing my usual thing I noticed mbm showed a high voltage of 12.9v on the rail(aver of 12.6), I ofcourse was not happy to see this, but thought it was probably about .4v or so off like my antec was. Today I was letting Juanito, a kid my sister was babysitting, play NFSU2.(Most stressful game I have) After about 30min of him playing that I heard my speakers to my pc pop, as if the pc was turned off by him, he came out a min or two later, and went outside, I went in my room and the pc was ofcourse off, I pushed the power button--and it wouldnt turn on! I was about to open it up, and take the psu out when I decided to flip the off/on switch a few times, it worked. So I guess we know the over voltage protection works. Thats the only thing I could think of, I opened the psu up and didnt mess with anything, just looking for some kind of adjustment, but there is none. It looks like it will be going back to newegg, and I will be getting one of the lower wattage blue fortrons. Do you think the 300w would be enough? I figure it would, as the only difference between it and the 350w one is 1a on the 12v rail. And I can't really afford the extra money the 350w one costs. ATNG let me down :( I figured it would be decent enough for the money, looked well built on the inside. Maybe it just isnt a good design.
I took the chance for you guys, and I just don't think these atng( Rosewill ) units are that great, atleast not the ones under 500w.(And the 500w+ ones are losing any kind of potential as I believe we have a member here that recently got a coolmax unit, and it wasn't working very well) So after trying them, I still dont recommend them, looks like one or two people have gotten dud units from newegg as well..
Btw, MassiveOverkill has used a few of these supplies and they have worked fine for him.(Partially why I decided to take a chance) I may just trade it for another, but I don't think I have enough faith for that.
Ok this is bs, playing NFSU2 and it dies on me, same thing as before, takes about 20 seconds before it will let me turn it back on. I dunno if this is actually the psu's fault though, with my antec the rails werent really bad except for the 3.3v which according to mbm would drop as low as 2.4v. My video would just die(no video signal at all) and the computer would not shutdown so it obviously locked as well. I figured it was the 3.3v line causing the troubles(I understand that is where my ti4200 gets it's power from), but now i'm not so sure. I wonder if my mobo is screwed up, I don't get the dead video with this supply, but it does just die, it seems to be something else messed up. The psu does not run hot, and I dont see how it could be overloaded at all. I'm gonna trade it for a a 350w fortron or maybe one of the ttgi's from directron.com. it only happens with NFS though, doesn't do it with halo, but halo doesnt seem to use as much juice for some reason, the rails barely budge playing it.
Is it possible something on my board is tripping the psu? I just cleaned my pc out today and there are no bulged caps or anything like that as far as I can tell. With the symptoms I had with the antec, and this psu screwing up with the same game fairly randomly like the antec, i'm thinking it is the board or card somehow. It can't be the software itself though, as the psu trips off and the pc will not turn on.
Any ideas? :bang head
EDIT: might of fixed it by loosening my memory timings, however I dont know what my board was doing to make the psu shutoff. We'll see if I spoke too soon after a few days of gaming.
