If you want to hook up your buddy's computer with yours, you need to use a crossover cable. You can get a crossover adapter (changes a regular cat5e cable to a crossover) on ebay for $10 shipped. I have one and it works wonderfully. I'm assuming you have a wireless router. It's acting as a dhcp server for your computer. With ICS, your computer will be acting as a dhcp server for your friends computer. You have to make sure that your router isn't giving out the same ip addresses as your computer is otherwise you'll be getting an ip conflict.

Yea AFAIK ICS will only give out IPs in the 192.168.0.xxx range, so you'll probably need to change the range given out by your router to a diff subnet such as 192.168.1.xxx to get it to work.

I know linksys routers default to 192.168.1.xxx, so if you have one of those you're fine. If not, I'm pretty sure you can set your router's dhcp to use only a certain range, so your buddy's comp can get a non-conflicting ip address.

hummm a litte confusing,,,,,, where do i start,,,,, i had it working yesterday but after a long night of benge drinking i have forgot, i do have a crossover cable, my buddys computer is not hooked into the router, his cable is hooked into my network card, then my wireless network is the one i use for the internet, i dont quite understand what you mean by changing the subnet address because i thought with a router you didnt have to have addresses set up, and if so how do you change what address the wireless router uses, its a d link wireless router, any more help from anyone?

The problem indicated by that error message says that your router is currently using the IP windows needs to use (192.168.0.1) to be a dhcp server for the wired connection. You need to change the IP address that your router uses (to say 192.168.1.1) and change the range of IP addresses it gives out to match this (192.168.1.xxx) or you wont be able to access the internet. After you have done this try again to share the connection and it should work fine. I dont think it is possible to change the ranges windows gives out in XP so changing it on the router is the only option.

You could try the manual to find out how to do it. You can get it from here (http://support.dlink.com/products/view.asp?productid=DI-524)

thanks for all the help, and im not sure that you all can help me with, i think it has something to do wih the companies hardware, but when i try to change the ip address for the router, it asks for an user name and password, well my manual saids to enter "admin" as the user name and to leave the password blank but when i do i get a "401 unauthorized access", so that one is new to me

If the router has been setup its likley the default blank password was changed. Did you set the router up yourself or did someone else do it?

Usually routers have a blank username and admin as the password. Try that. If you still can't get into the router, restore it to default settings. You can probably do that by shutting off power for a minute or so, or holding a reset button for like 30 seconds.

didnt read everything but just plug his computer into your router, and make sure your router has DHCP turned on and can server more then 3 IP addresses.

As said - for D-link i think it is admin / password as the info

for linksys it is leave the user blank and put in admin as password.

That's not what he's looking for; he wants the second computer plugged into the first one that has wireless internet to connect with the router.

update....................well i still havent got it to work, i have tried to reset top factory defaults but tried to connect to the router but no luck, the manaul i downloaded said that the username was admin and to leave the password blank, well typed it in and after 3 times it sends me and unauthorized access error, so i dont know whats going on there, but for eveyone ill make it short, im tring to be cheap and not have to buy another wireless card, one computer hooks into my computer through a Lan card, and my computer also has a wireless card, which im tryin to share for the other computer but there is an ip address conflict with the router and windows xp internet connection wizard, so ill keep everyone posted,,,,,,,,,, im still open for any suggestions so type away

The only way you can resolve the problem is to change the ip range the router uses. The password should be reset after a hard reset. Have you tried using any other passwords, such as "password"? If you set the router up yourself then you'd need the password, if not the person that set it up should know the password.

Short of buying another wireless card thats your only option.

Try changing the ip address given by windows ics...And call up your router's tech support and get them to help you get in there and change the ip range.

I dont think it is possible to change the range of addresses given out by ICS in Windows XP. It would be a lot easier if you could though. If the worst comes the worst though the D-Link 524 does have 4 ethernet ports so you could plug the other computer into one of those if nothing else.

well as far away as the router is it would kinda defeat the purpose of having a wirelees card, i got it to work using analog x proxy and setting up another computer with it, but with windows xp alone, no dice, any more suggestions,,,,, oh tech support told me the same thing as the manuel, go figure
