I just got my new laptop and want to do to it what i plan on doing to this machine. Is there a way to partition the HD when there is already an OS and stuff installed and not lose any information? any way to do this for free? (for a while at least)
i remember hearing partition magic can do this, but im just gonna post here and see what you guys say.

Partition Magic will do this...but not sure if the free version will allow you to do this or not...

nope, free version just lets you see what you can do, no editing allowed...
Don't even partially suggest it.

Mate,
If you are willing to take the risk, pop in a Knoppix CD and see if it lets you use the partitioner to change the partitions. In fact you could also use any Linux Distro (the ones with GUI i.e SuSe and Mandrake are easiest to use), partition the HDD and exit without installing.
I must warn you that you risk data loss if things go awry. Try this if you have nothing else to do :)
