Ive just recently been taking an interest in overclocking and i have a newbie question for you guys. How could i tell if my 1.4 athlon 266fsb is ready to be overclocked?

easiest way is to get into bios and fiddle with the multiplier and see if the L1 bridges are connected
if they are not.. it will not have the correct amount of mhz.. if it is... it should be multiplier, (e.g 7.5) times fsb (e.g 133)
which equals to 1ghz/1000mhz

just look at the L1 briges if they're not cut in the middle then ur CPU is unlocked..
I was unaware of overclocking via the multiplier, because I thought they'd all be locked as standard.
Heck no, I discovered, much to my delight, and now I'm running higher without stressing the rest of the machine.
Pray for stability...

All 1.4 GHz Athlons are unlocked. In fact, most of them above 1.2 GHz are unlocked, if I'm not mistaken. So yes, your 1.4 (unless you have a real oddball) is unlocked.
