I know theres one guy on the forums that I talked to for a bit thats from knoxville but I was wondering if anyone else is. Reason being im moving there in about 4 months, and dont want the same thing to happen as the last time I moved.

Last time I moved I went from NV to TX I was from TX to begin with but from some little hick town with 2000 people so I figured hey back to TX where decent people are not these immature kids plus my mom said oh youre going to a good school blah blah blah the people will be cool and so forth. All in all I didnt move back to this hick town which I go to everyother weekend and the people are cool etc. Im living on the "rich" side of town going to the "best school in town" which is actually HORRIBLE. Ontop of that the kids at this school are pathetic. All in all its nothing but a bunch of immature, girly (sub. for another word) acting people that are stuck up think theyre the best and more than likely wont talk to you if you dont drive a BMW or better or wear a $100 pair of pants they smoke weed 90% of the time and cry if their new designer pants get water on them. Sure I may have money or whatever but in no way am I like these people. Im the one thatll get along with anyone as long as you seem cool etc and wont judge you by things that wont matter 10 years from now. To be honest I go to school wearing whatever kinds of clothes so I dont get made fun of but as soon as I get home im wearing oily pants, a cut off shirt, and a pair of redwings.

My main question is how are the people there in knoxville? Are they like this or are they pretty cool non judgemental (sp?) sp that will take you for who you are and not what you have and dont cry like little babies all the time, and do they like to have fun and party?

Maybe its the whole high school deal or something which if thats the case sorry for writing something this long for people to have to read, but from what I have seen I have yet to see other people like this. I know people across town that go to other average middle class schools and in no way are they like these people. Basicly im just trying to figure out what ill be looking foward to seeing im not interested in spending my senior year in another hole like this.

BTW hope some of the stuff in this post didnt offend anyone nothing was directed to anyone in a negative way just tried to make a point and get things said

not from knox and i have to say its a small city, very small, about all that ever happens there is UT games... and when they happen dont bother leaving your house because the traffic will be so bad you will never get anywhere. Good school though, if you live on campus then there is more going on... well im just rambeling now.

Sounds good to me from the way you put it although I wont be going to college for another year possibly two because after graduating id like to work in the oilfield for a year then go to school for IT and return to offshore doing IT stuff, but as for colleges im lookin at UT or a college in PA being that I have a few friends there.

I live in Knoxville, and it is not as small and the traffic is not as bad as infinitevalence says, unless you goto West Knoxville, then the traffic is really insane. It's kind of hard to tell you what the "people of Knoxville" are like because there is so much diversity here, as with every other place I suppose, but the people I'm friends with are pretty non-judgemental (can't help you much here..). Also, yes, I'm sure it's just the stupidity of high school kids that is getting to you :p

Well, actually, the traffic might be kind of bad and I might just be really used to it because when my dad was down here from Dayton, Ohio, he was blown away by the "insane" traffic, but it seemed just fine to me. But then again, he lives around nothing but corn fields, so who knows.

And here's a nifty piece of advice you will benefit greatly from, NEVER NEVER goto Gatlinburg on a holiday unless you feel like killing yourself, because that's what will end up happening. The whole town is basically just a big tourist attraction full of rides and hotels, though they do have some cool things like Ripley's Aquarium and Dollywood. Going there on a holiday = bumper to bumper with the worst drivers on the planet that are probably drunk on SMALL ass 2 lane roads where people park on the sides creating more traffic jams because all the parking spots are taken since the whole town is overflowing with people. DIE DIE DIE.

Any other questions?

I'm from Knoxville, too. I got both my undergrad and grad degrees from UT. Now I work with international students at the local community collge.

UT is a really diverse campus in some ways. More than 27,000 students, more than 1,000 international students. Not a large african-american population, though. It's a great place to study if you are able to motivate yourself, but if you can't--well there are a lot of freshmen who fail out.

Complaining about traffic in Knoxville is relative. Compared to Atlanta, NYC, LA, or even Nashville, it's great. But compared to Small Town, USA it's terrible. There's traffic during rush hour (surprise!), but on the whole drivers are curteous, and they let you in when you're changing lanes, etc. Sure there are idiots on the road, but there are everywhere. I have a 12 mile commute during rush hour--it takes me about 25 mins-30 mins to get to work.

People? Well you need to be in the circles that fit you. And in a college with 27,000 people, I'm sure they're there. Sure there are rich jerks there, and there are stoners. There is a HUGE frat circle that it sounds like you want to avoid.

UT also has a pretty good study abroad program--if you've got the money, I'd highly recommend spending a semester or a year abroad in your junior year. I know some of the people in that office, and they are really great.

It's a small city/large town of about 300,000 in the greater Knoxville area. There are some great local gems in places like Tomato Head and Preservation Pub (can get a great import pint any night from 4-9 for frickin' $2--try to get that in a big city).

The football games are nuts, but that's only 5 or 6 Saturdays in the fall.
