View Full Version : Manually increase Antec True power fan speed?

Hi I have a Antec True Blue 480 watt PSU in my system. I think if I could run the fans at full speed it would greatly help in cooling the system off and creating good airflow past the cpu and gpu. Noise is not a concern to me either.
When I put my hand on the back where the air comes out of the PSU it is very hot air so all of the hot air is at the top of the case and is not being moved effectively enough!
Is there any mod I can do to it preferably without opening it? I was thinking I could just modify the temp probe it has inside but that would involve opening it and would rather not do that...
Thanks guys!

Really the only way is to open it up, to either change fans or bypass the probe. :welcome:
EDIT:
Believe me Silverstreak, how is it possible to change the fan speeds or bypass anything without opening it up? It's not. And with it being the True Blue I wouldnt open it up, you might need the warranty in the future.
Simple mod that can be done to get the hot air out of the top of your case would be to cut an 80 or 92mm blowhole for a fan, got one on my case and it works well.

The temperature sensor is usually a small green bean with two leads under it, and if it's located close to the low voltage heatsink you may be able to bend it over so it touches and causes higher than normal temperature readings, which should speed up the fans. In Antecs it's located between that heatsink and the power transformer (covered with yellow tape, maybe marked "CWT" on top or side) and probably labelled RTH3 or RTH2. You may be able to reach this thermistor through the top fan grill, but if not, unscrew the grill and slide the fan over.
Soldering a variable or fixed resistor across the thermistor can also speed up the fans
Don't ever do a mod like this with the high voltage heatsink because it often runs at 170 volts DC (it does in Antecs), but even if it doesn't you don't want anything on the low voltage side coming in contact with the high voltage side.
Some Antecs have two thermistors for temperature sensing (another large disk-shaped one to reduce power-on surge), the second located on the other side of the heatsink, but I don't know what it does (anybody?).

Thankyou for that info!! I cracked open the case and it took a little while but I finally found the thermistor, it was marked RTH3. It was in a hard to see place RIGHT NEXT to the larger heatsink and the power transformer. So what I did is I put a blob of thermal compound on the end of a dowel and blobbed it onto the thermistor. Then I bent the thermistor against the heatsink squishing the thermal compund between the two.
I just ran a cs:source game with 64 bots and now my temps are 3c less! The best part is the fans are actually moving a lot more air I can actually feel the breeze out the back with my hand, before it was very hard to notice it at all! I didn't notice any more noise either.
Thanks again and I recommend this mod to anybody else who wants a little bit more airflow from their antec PSU.
