After about 50 attempts to get my internet connection sharing to work with a 56k modem and crossover cable between 2 PCs (it kept going away for no apparent reason) I gave up and uninstalled ICS. I must have made a tweaking error somewhere as now, on my ex-sharing computer, each time I try to map a network drive the modem dialer pops up! I tried everything I can find relating to tcp/ip, file sharing, default protocol, etc., and it all seems to be configured right. The other computer works fine and all the settings appear identical. Evidently something is screwed up in my registry. Any ideas on what to delete or change to stop this behavior and get back to netBEUI for file sharing?

If this is the machine to connect to the other machine (the client) then check your dial-up settings. also be sure that "Always dial my default connection" is enabled in the IE options (assuming you use IE)

OR

try uninstalling the NIC then rebooting and reinstalling it with all the right drivers. then reconfigure your network. amazingly, this fixes many problems :D
