so heres the story. my dad use to have prodigy.net internet back in the 90s, but then they got taken over by sbc yahoo and we've been using their isp until now. the thing is, my dad used his @prodigy.net email account for business and now that we're using sbc, our login for the yahoo email is xxxxx@prodigy.net(so i guess our yahoo login is xxxxxxx@prodigy.net@yahoo.com). now i want to switch our isp because we are paying $20 a month for 56k(i tried to change earlier) and my parents are arguing that once we switch, the yahoo account will stop functioning and we will lose that @prodigy.net account and my dad wont be able to get any of his business emails. so my question is, if we do decide to switch our isp, will we still have that @prodigy.net account?
i would have to say NO
you pay prodigy. so why would they still host your mail for you if you leave them?
I wouldnt if I were them would you?

You won't have the prodigy.net account anymore when you switch.
But: you will still be able to login to yahoo with xxx@prodigy.net since it's only a username, nothing special. Also I bet dollars to donuts that you can change that username setting in yahoo or give yahoo another email address to forward to, like the new email addy at the new ISP

but the businesses my dad does business with, when they send email to xxxxx@prodigy.net, then it will still be forwarded to that yahoo account even if we dont pay for the yahoo isp anymore? thats the only thing worrying my dad, is that if he changes isp, then yahoo will stop hosting his account and he will lose all his business emails. so lets say i switch my isp right now, then if someone sends an email to xxxxxx@prodigy.net, will my dad receive that email or not?
just have ur dad mass-email everyone on his contacts list (assuming thats everyone who emails him) saying he is getting a new email address....not that difficult.

unfortunetly my dad is one of those people who dont want to put other people at an inconvenience so thats one thing he's not going to do. so right now im stuck using sbc yahoo internet? is there anyway i can just pay for e-mail hosting and still switch?
First thing his email is very unprofesional anyways. If he wants an email that will not change he has two options, the first of which being buying a domain name name and doing his own email. Second going with a gmail or other free email service. It is really dumb to be trapped into an ISP because you do not want to change an email especially when it is a combination of the last isp and the current ISP anyways.
it is sort of like it used to be with cell phones. They used to trap you because they kept the number. Then number portability came and now they trap you with 2 year contracts:eek: Tell your dad to not be a slave to this kind of entrapment. Get an email that it does not matter what ISP you have or even if you do not have an ISP at all.

unfortunetly he didnt think of this 10years ago, and i dont blame him, but theres really nothing he can do about it now. he does the domain hosting for a secondary company now, but the primary company is kind of stuck w/ that e-mail. so theres no way to get out of paying for 56k per month w/out giving up that email? if this is true, then i think ill go off somewhere and cry for a while
ask prodigy if there is a reduced monthly if you dont use them to give you an ip just to host your mail

Just have him change his email. Have him make sure that he will not need to change it again. Also call the ISP and see if they will forward the email addy. There is a good chance they will, but for how long it will be forwarded only they know;)

Get your father his own domain: all webhosters throw in several email accounts. It will cost no more than a dollar per month, looks better for a business to have their own domain and he can never really lose his new address again.
With the old prodigy.net address, set up an autoresponder, basically similar what telephone companies do when you number has changed: "Please note that the email address has changed, now it xxxx@businessname.com". Let your father monitor it and as soon as all his regular business associates use the new address, drop the old prodigy one. If some customer has emailed the old one but not the new, your father can respond to the original email, so no business will be lost.

i know this is an old thread, but im reviving it since i cant stand paying $20/month for dial-up anymore. anyways, my dad said he would probably get cable if i could find a way to get sbc yahoo to keep the e-mail address alive, so i found this:
http://support.sbcglobal.net/article.php?item=3590
i dont quite understand this, but it says ill be able to keep the yahoo id after i cancel the service, but i still dont know if email sent to xxxxxx@prodigy.net will still be forwarded to that yahoo id account. im going to call yahoo customer service later but if someone can clear this up for me here it would be really helpful. thanks.
You probably will not be able to keep the prodigy email. Have him change to an email that is not hooked into an ISP. That way he will never have to change it or be locked into a service because of his want to keep the same email.

looks like theres no way out. what email services would you guys recommend? i mean, just the free ones like yahoo and google? is there some service that would probably be around for a long time? sorry for the questions, but im just a little ****ed to be paying so much for dial-up, especially since it now disconnects on me every 5 hrs. ok, off to try to convice my dad about this. thanks.
If he is doing domain hosting as a business then he is definitely capable of buying a domain with hosting and using that for his email.

domain hosting costs about $30 a year right, and on top of that he has to get mail hosting, which is another $30. ill have to figure out a way to set it up. if that doesnt work then ill just get him a gmail account.

Your figures are grossly wrong. go to Godaddy.com to see how much a domain is. If he is running a web business he most likely already has a server which he can use to host the domain.
Hosting can be had for cheap or very expensive depending on what you need.
You mentioned your dad is in business doing domain stuff. If this is really the case then just ask him why he is relying on his email coming from some ISP when he can do it himself and not be locked into a bad ISP situation.
My advice if he says no is to save up and work odd jobs and pay for broadband yourself.

I'll have to agree to that, but be wwarned once you go to broadband there is no turning back. Actually i am kinda suprised, i thought the only people still using dial-up were MY parents. LOL

lol. my parents too. if i ever want to game though then i just take my rig to my friends house. kendan- my dad doesnt work with web hosting. he's even more computer illiterate than my mother, who only knows how to surf the web and update the antivirus. as for the domain, how much would it actually cost to host a domain page? i was under the impression that you first had to buy a domain name and then use outside email hosting if you didnt host it yourself, which i doubt my dad can do. but like i said, if it gets too complicated ill just set up a free gmail account for him.

Here is the quote that I thought meant he was doing some kind of business with domains
he does the domain hosting for a secondary company now, but the primary company is kind of stuck w/ that e-mail.
The only way to get him to change emails is if he sees it as an advantage to change emails. How will dumping dialup be an advantage to him and his business? Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages for him? Start answering those questions and try to think along those lines when you try to convince him to do it.
Good luck and remember you can still do odd jobs and pay for it yourself;)

either that or i could just get all my friends to dl stuff for me ;) . the part about domain hosting wasnt done by my dad. its a second side company that hes co-running and the other guy set up the domain. my dad basically deals with the managing stuff. sorry if that was a little confusing. kendan- youre probably right. its probably not worth it for him to cancel his dialup especially if i look at what hes going to loose in the long run. i mean, if he gets cable, well its faster and cheaper, but he has to go through the inconvenience of switching his email, at which point he might lose some business. guess right nows a good a time as any to find a job. thanks guys.

He can always let the old email/dialup account run for a few more months besides cable, just for periodically checking his old email account. It will cost more in that period but it's only temporary. And it would really look a whole lot more professional if he had his own domain, costs <= 3$ per month with hosting included. Domain only is only around $10 per year
