View Full Version : Plz recommend a P4 for video editing
Looking at this graphic, the Pentiums are all near the top, but which one should I buy? I have $300 or less to spend on the CPU

We need to know what mobo you have or plan to get and what your overclocking goals are.

I'd go with the one I am getting the P4 630. 259$ I think this the price. I believe the 640 and 660 are out of your range.
I would get a 3.0 or if you can a 3.2 will it be for socket 775 or 478? and get a good MoBo so you can overclock it.

Go for a socket 775, and take a 630.
I haven't bought a mobo or ram yet, which ones would be good? I don't have that much money to spend.. maybe $100 or less for the motherboard. Basically I just need something a lot faster than my Athlon 1700+/KR7A/512mb pc2100

Abit AS8 with a new 630 CPU is the cheapest (and best) combo you can do with the LGA775

Very good advice for the budget minded. Then you can use regular DDR RAM that will do something like 250 FSB using the 1:1 ratio. That would kick butt on encoding video.
i upgraded my mobo and i have an Abit AS8 for sale...listed it for 2 weeks on ebay, had some watchers and 1 bidder on the last day and that bidder cancelled his/her bid...i took pretty good care of it and it's already boxed up really secure for shipping, if you're interested...i had the 520, OC'ed to 240 x 14, 1:1 dual channel with my ddr500 and yes it kicked butt on video encoding with the additional boost from raid0...
not sure if this is appropriate, but i thought i just throw that out

And when most if not all 6xx do over 4 being locked at 14 - 16x makes it a VERY good combo. Most guys dont even need to kick back the multi as I am.
I only need DDR500 speeds on the chipset because 258 x 16 = 4.13

How much would you want for it? They're on Newegg for $92 shipped. I'm in Northern VA.

Welcome :welcome:
Might want to discuss this in PM's. Since buying/sellign in these sections arn't allowed.
As soon as you hit 100 posts you get access to the classifies section which you can view all the good deals that people get from reselling hardware and such, just like above. $300 is not alot to work with but it can be done. I did that when I upgraded an old system to a XP2600+ for just under $350 with video card (mobo, cpu, vid card).
