I've been runing into some temperature problems with my system. Currently I am running a 1.33 Ghz AMD Tbird on an Asus A7A266 MB. I'm running Win2k Pro and am experiencing total system freezes. I tried everything I could think of and them came to see that my AMD is running at around 47-50C or around 116-120F. I used to have a non-conductive shim and have since replaces it with a copper one and lined the insides with thermal tape to avoid shorting out the components on top of the chip and it runs about 3 degrees cooler. At home (at college now) I had a nice powerful air conditioner in my room which I used to cool my computer and it stayed at around 32C or low 80F. Even when the AC what shut off, it never hit 40C. I currently am using the TheroEngine "Super Charged" heatsink and my case I'm using the Tornado 3000 from 3dcool.com which I've cut two more holes in to have 2 120mm fans blowing in and 2 120mm fans blowing out. Loud? Probably. Anyway, with all that said. I have been reduced to having a room fan in an open window blowing the cool air from outside into my case and its still at 45C!! or 113F. Granted I am making this judgemend off of the Asus PC Probe which I hear to be off a few degrees, but still! This is way to hot and I've discected this problem every way I can and 45C is the lowest I've been able to get it idle. Can someone shed some light for me? I am in great need of help.

Thanks.

Asus mobo probes can be off by up to 10C!!
Your temp could be absolutely fine, but if you are worried feel the heatsink after it has been on running a lot of programs or a 3D game is better, then see if the heatsink is hot.

If it is really hot then I would personally think about changing to a better cooler.

Global Win CAK38
Millenium Glaciator
Thermalright SK6

These are the top heatsinks around and investing in one of these is highly recomended.

Don't worry about the shim occasionally shims can raise the hight of the heatsink so it isn't touching the core of the chip properly. this can adversly affect your temps!!

Are you using any thermal paste such as Arctic Silver or Radio Shack stuff, I would do as it fills microscopic gaps between the HSF and the processor core and that can help your temps further.

Hope this helps ;)

I do have thermal goop on it, though the heatsink I got has some sort of clay substance that I guess went on the top of whatever that AMD thing is sticking out. But I put the goop on anyway and I thought that maybe the goop and clay stuff mixed and wouldn't allow maximum heat transferrence. I hope its just the heat sink. I'll take a look into the ones you suggested too.

you can clean the goop of with Alcohol if you mess it up, and simply use the back of a credit card or a back side of a knife to smooth it on with don't put too much goop on just a little!
