Here is some advice and a little tid-bit just incase you didn't know :D. I was working on my router and modem while on the phone with the broadband tech, anyway he asked me to unplug them both, which I did. He then asked me to plug them both back up, I guess this is some type of resetting, anyway I pluged them both back up.
After a couple if seconds I see something white, like a large piece of dust or lint, I thought nothing of it, just thought it was a large piece of dust or lint. Then a few seconds later I see it again, I'm thinking "that is a lot of dust". So I get closer..."OMG #!%@#$%". My router is toast. It was smoke I was seeing, not large pieces of dust or lint :D.
So I'm assuming the modem and router have some type of different voltage, wattage or something. So if you ever unplug your router or modem, make sure you use the same cord to plug them back up.
EDIT....
After a little investigating I have found the problem.
1. My stupidity :) (pluging the wrong one into the router)
2. The router power output is 12VDC 1000mA
3. The cable modem power output is 24VDC 600mA :D
As the saying goes, "you learn something everyday".
