try booting with "last known good configuration" or safe mode and see if they are successful. Post back with results.

before the windows xp screen comes up, hit f8 on the keyboard, and try safe mode.

have you thought about a repair install? as opposed to refomatting, you do a normal install without reformatting, and windows will replace all its files, still keeping everything on your harddrive. this will let you back everything up...

As already stated I would try a repair install if you have a xp cd and not recovery disk. Also safe mode should just show text when loading so thats wierd. Try safe mode with command promt see if its still same thing. Or try debugging mode.

blank password? "password"

you might have no choice but to reformat. sick. connect harddrive to another computer if you want to back anything up then

just hit enter it should work. Thats wrong thing though, you dont want that because next it will ask for recovery disk. Keep going on with normal install until you get to part were you pick partition to install on. Select the correct partition and you will have option to do a repair install. Thats the install you want.

if you still struggling try this.Open the computer as soon as it starts hit F2 or hold Ctrl Alt Del key.You should see a screen coming up. Try to find the hardware set up. Change boot order
it usually reads something like this:
-1 floppy disk
-2 Hard drive
-3 CDRom or DVD
invert order make CDROM boot 1. Save the configuration press F10.
Insert the XP CD.Close the computer.
If CD does not boot.
Close the computer.Leave CD in the drive.
Reopen immediately
Press F12 or F8 several times, it depends on the computer .A screen will open with a boot choice enter the CDRom choice.
When XP starts find the recovery console option. It will check your disk for error .Just follow the prompt.

If this does not do it:

Find a working computer (internet cafe).
Go to http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Maxtor/menuitem.3c67e325e0a6b1f6294198b091346068/?channelpath=/en_us/Support/Software%20Downloads/ATA%20Hard%20Drives&downloadID=22

Download the program on 1 floppy disk.Just follow the prompt.

Before starting your computer "insert floppy".
Start your computer
Now you should see the Caldera boot page coming up and then PowerMax.
When PowerMax is ready check your drive for error.
If it is corrupted in one or several disk sectors: "low format the drive".
Then burn the drive .You drive will be then "certified error free".
Only then reinstall XP...Hope it helps...
