Hi,
I have a small home network. 2 wired desktops and 1 wireless notebook. I installed a "regular" windows network using a D-link router.
All pc's have XP-pro installed. When on one of the pc's I share the root of the C drive (for instance) I can see what's in the C drive but can't access the |program files| folder. When I click on it, it will give me an error, I don't have the required permission to acces this folder, contact network administrator bla bla..
Well I have no passwords set or anything like that. On the other pc's I can access everything that I have shared. I did a complete reinstallation of XP-pro to get rid of this problem.
What am I doing wrong? is there a box that I need to un-check or check?
Thanks for any help

You really shouldnt share the root anyway, big security risk. You could share a folder away from any system stuff, and install things you might want to share in that.
If you are wanting to install stuff or make changes from a remote location, You should consider using something like Tight VNC (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/tightvnc.html) or WinVNC (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/vnc.html) or some other similar proggies. I prefer Tight VNC just because it seems easier to use on a home network.

The root of a windows xp machine is shared by default as c$ (hidden). As long as you are a local admin you can access all parts of the c:\ drive.

Well I am the admin on all the computers. I kept getting the notification that the folder was not accessible, I might not have permission etc. etc. So I shared the root of the drive, to try to solve the problem.
Well even with the root shared and no limitation as far as a password is set I still get the 'error' .
There should be something that I am not seeing in this area, because I shared the root of the C drive on both desktops in exactly the same way, and on one both I can open the c: drive, but on only one can i access a folder like program fils, and documents, and a few others. On the other PC I can get into everything..
any pointers?

I had the same problem with XP on my rigs, got rid of that. see if you have the firewall active, also, I have heard that the Service Packs sometimes bork little things...

well, The windows firewall is turned off too BTW.
have you tried this with a remote desktop connection
and a password on all three
I have three comps in my little home network. I set up one as the router and internet gateway for the other two (stuffed it full of nic cards) all are on Xp two are XP pro one is Xp home I kept getting the same type of message about not having permission until I set up a pass word on all three of them.

are you using simple file sharing?
are you connecting via UNC?

yes, simple file sharing is enabled. I tried to connect with passwords set and logged, in all computers and no passwords...... but all that does not change anything.
I connect to the network using a hub/wireless router. so they all access the internet through the router, and each other. it's only the one PC that won't allow the other ones to access some folders, even though I installed all the same options on the other computers...

Yes i know the same issue you have also. All my comps are unpassworeded (soon to be changed actually) but certain folders you can't access is windows and programs directories directly from the root. You have to have that folder shared directly to get access to them. Its a pain I know.
