How do i get the heatspreaders off of my hyper-x...so it will run cooler

alright, the clips on the top, youll need to pry those off with like a small screw driver. then either heat the ram up with a hairdryer or seal them in a plastic bag and put them in the freezer, either way will get the spreaders off.

didnt think it was that difficult...sigh

its the damned thermal tape, taking the clips of is EASY, but the spreaders themselves. thats what sucks

LMFRY

it must take a tiny screw driver to take the clips off

yea, try to find a small flatblade screwdriver to wedge under the side of the clip, and then pry if off. it should remove pretty easy.

gah.. i should just BUMP MY THREAD... ive done this, and ive made a guide.. bump it??

what is holding the dumb spreaders on..and should they run better with them off or not?

thermal tape is holding them on. its soo bad to take off. thats why the freezer step is needed. it stops it from holding onto the ram.

is it worth the pain?

well, you can figure out what chips are in the ram, and also are you planning on cooling them some other way? if its bh-5, which im suspecting, then if i were you, id get a fan blowing on that ram sooo fast, if you overclock with it.

I was going to put some as5 on the chips to get better transfer..but that doesnt sound like it will work...and i was gonna put a 60mm fan on it.

im almost positive they are bh-5

all right let me tell the truth...its not 3200 but 2700 running at 3200 at CL2...i had to clock it back down..i think because of heat and want to be able to get up there again without it blue screening on me....so that is why i want to do it and know if its worth it

itll be worth it to do this, cause itll give you more overclockability. whats do you have for volts going though these puppies anyway?

LMFRY

mobo dont tell me...i set the setting from normal to hgih...thats all it did...and it ran for quite a while at 400..but eventually had to clock er back down to 333

CCUABIDExORxDIE

well that could be the adverse effects of spring time and warmer temps right there. a fan with spreaders or not will help you alot, but id upgrade that mobo first, cause i have a bad feeling about settings of normal and high voltages.

it has the same thing for the agp voltage...but it ran fine so im gonna put a fan on it and crank it to 400...cause i like getting 3200MB/s

I say keep them on and get an active cooling system going like you said you were going to do. There is a great way to do one in the "cooling" section done with a hanger. I also have heatspreaders on mine, don't know if it helps or not, but I'm going to add an 80mm fan blowing cold air onto the ram.

I thought though, that the heatspreaders would ONLY work with some kind of air blowing onto them. Of course there not going to work if you just slapped them on there and say "DO YOUR JOB", they would need some kind of air to blow on them which would in turn cool the heatspreaders which would act "KIND OF" like a heat sink then cool the ram. Where the hot air goes I do not know. :eh?:

i added some to my guide, it should be all you need to get off your heatspreaders...

and NO you DON'T need to stick the ram in the freezer, i actually warmed mine up (my second stick wasn't warm when i removed it though)...

btw, what is your memory's model number?? (it will be on the warranty sticker on the heatspreader, something like:

KHX2700/<MB of RAM on stick>

Sounds like BH6 not BH5 if it was HyperX PC2700 that can do PC3200 at CL2 and responds to voltage.
