Windows 98 doesn't need himem.sys, it's only there for DOS compatibility.

If I remember right, himem.sys as well as emm386.exe ARE needed, but only to install Win98SE. For this reason, I keep both of them on a floppy. Sometimes the 98 installation process informs you that it can't find these files. It's possible to go into a Help menu at that point, it'll tell you how to address the problem.

If the suggested steps don't work or the directions seem too complicated, having the files on a floppy, so that you can copy them to the directories/files where Win98 wants them comes in mighty handy!

I dunno why Win98 pulls this cutie sometimes and I don't know why after what seems to be a good install you can get that wonderful error message that informs you that ~20 critical .dll and .vxd files can't be found. Ask Bill.

Windows 98 does load himem.sys, if you do a step by step comfirmation if loads it. If your himem.sys files goes missing copy it from the win98 cd and put it in either your root or windows dir.

Win 98 does NOT need himem.sys, possibly when installing in fact quite likely but once installed it's quite possible to boot 98 with no config.sys or autoexec.bat file.
