Hey I have a Radeon 9800 Pro 128 and I am using ATI Tool right now. I just installed my new Zalman VF700 Cu and I clicked find max core in ATI Tool. My question is, when will it stop searching for max core. I have the core up to 430 right now with no artifacts. Will ATI Tool stop searching when it finds it's first abnormality? Or will it stop whem my card is dead?

As soon as it scans an artifact it will back the clock down and scan for artifacts again. It will then continue to scan for artifacts until it finds another one. If you leave ATI tool on for 12 hours and come back and it has been scanning for artifacts for 8 hours you know that you are pretty much at your max stable OC.

However,
I have a R9550, and ATiTool will not find the max core.
My max stable value is 450, but ATiTool will continue to raise this to over 550, even with screen lockups, atifacts, and black screens.
It may be better to raise the core 5MHz at a time, and then run an artifact test for a few minutes. This takes time, but, in my experince, more reliable.
