This is a somewhat common problem. One thing you can try is disablinf "fast shutdown".
Choose RUN, type msconfig, and choose the GENERAL tab. Click ADVANCED, turn on the DISABLE FAST SHUTDOWN option, and click OK twice when you are done.
You might also check in your BIOS to make sure ACPI is enabled, as this sometimes causes problems with shutdown.
Hope this helps.

I have seen this problem a lot with SE. It also happens quite often following the installation of software. I had a friend that bought a new laptop a while back and ended up returning it a few days later because it would never shutdown properly. You may expect this more from an older machine that you are upgrading but on a brand new one that comes with the OS pre-installed? I wonder if MS added more bugs then they fixed with SE :D

I don't use 98 much anymore I run mostly W2K and now XP, and also Linux.

I have the same problem and was given the same advice, but I don't have a DISABLE FAST SHUTDOWN box to check under the advanced tab. I'm running WinME on an MSI 6337 Lite, with a pIII 700.

Any ideas?

i had to go into the BIOS and disable the APCI. I believe that is what the advanced power control program is called. Not only does doing this allow you to shut your computer off in 98SE but it can also allow you to get 14 extra fps in in some games. See the front page of this site for more info and benchmarks.

For anyone that does not want to disable the ACPI function in their BIOS, Microsoft has a patch that may work to resolve the probem. You can get it here. (http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/wurecommended/s_wufeatured/win98SE/license.asp)
