View Full Version : How far can I OC?
Well, I recently got a new computer and got intrested in Overclocking once I saw what my friends computer could do with it. However I'm a complete noob at it and doubt I would be able to OC my computer without breaking it. Specs are AMD 3200+ 64, 1gb ram, Radeon 9800 Pro. Now the only cooling I use is the one that came with the processor. That being said do you think I could overclock my cpu from 2.2 ghz to 2.4 without it overheating? Oh yeah, and would it be smarter to overclock the fsb or the multiplier?

Please post what motherboard you are using and what PSU and the specs of your ram you are using...

Dont laugh at my crappy ass budget. Edit: Or my lack of judgement on parts.

Im assuming thats not an athlon64 based on 2.2ghz.
welll...
Sorry to dissapoint, but you didnt exactly buy an overclocker friendly chip. If you are really looking into it, I would sell your 3200+ and get a 2600+ mobile (yes, the laptop version) if you can still find one. They should do 2.5 or more. Your 3200+ might do 2.4, might not.
As far as overheating, just get motherboard monitor (google it) to monitor your temps. As long as it stays below 55* or so, you are fine.
Usually, upping the voltage (which is a necessity to max overclock) raises temps a lot more than simply upping the frequency.
As far as fsb vs. multi- that chip is probably locked- that means you cant change the multi (thats why the mobles are nice- they are unlocked). So, that means you go nowhere without either fast ram or a mobo that can run asynch. Your sig says your ram is unstable- that probably dosent bode well for the former. You may be able to fix that by upping the voltage if it truly is your ram.
Good luck, there are a lot of guides out there that are a lot more helpful than I am :D

athlon 64, nForce3 chipset. there's no question that it is an A64, there are more overclcoker friendly chips than what he has but to do what your suggesting would require him selling his motherboard as well

hmm, for some reason I thought the a64 3200+ was 2.0, ghz- I guess I stand corrected.
No, nobody in their right mind would trade an a64 for an xp.
Since your overclocking an a64, it should be fairly easy- and 2.4 shouldnt be too much of a problem. Check out the overclocking a64s sticky in the cpu section.
