View Full Version : New Bucket cooler

I just put together my new bucket cooler, Temps aren't too bad on it, 40c max load @ 2.7 GHz (335*8) 1.55v. The fan on it is just a temporary thing to see if actually using evaporation helps it get cooler.
White trash ghetto cooling at it's finest.
There are two seperate pumps, a Hydor L30 to circulate the water up the towers (the pressure is so strong I cant push the socks down into the tubes).
The L35 pushes water up the 1/2" in the back of the tower to the inlet on the RBX and the two outlets go back to the bucket.

I hope you washed your socks before putting them on the cooler!
Your coolant looks green, what did you add to it? Is it a good idea to try to evaporate it?
And yes, very ghetto.

Hmm...everyones commented on the socks.
They were bleach white when I started, and I'd worn them a little thin already (these socks got a good 2 or 3 trips of 40 miles on them!), so I suppose they're translucent and the blue fabric underneath them is showing through, the green food dye in the water is contributing too I guess.

lol even more ghetto is the maskingtape+popsicle stick fan mounts for the SLI. It is pretty funny seeing all of that nice high-end stuff being cooled by such a ghetto method :D.
If you can stand looking at it keep it going.
I like it.
I used to think my old setup was ghetto, but this really takes the cake.
Keep up the good work!

Such good equipment, such trashy mounting hardware

whatever works it alright with me, keep it goin

That's something that is concerning me also. If it's just food coloring that is ok. Antifreeze, Zerex, WW, ect aren't ok of an evaporative setup.
Anyways, that's delightfully ghetto. :p You should make more towers to up cooling capacity.

I LOVE that!!!
I sometimes think that "ghetto" should be my middle name because I got into Overclocking and Modding for the challenge of getting top-level performance while spending short money.
The fancy stuff is nice, but the same performance (or BETTER) for a lot less dough is the way to go.
I have never messed with bucket cooling much: how much of a performance increase do you think you'd get with more towers?

ZachM-
Im pretty sure he realizes this, if you browse around the water cooling stickies you will find he has a sticky about evap towers and talks about not putting any additives like that in with it.

Haha, dude ditch those popsicle sticks, Cloths hangers bent correctly with a couple twist ties to hole em together works much better.
My x800xl is being held together by cloths hangers ATM, I should start a thread on it ;) I luv em.

The efficency, when I have the 90 mm fan blowing on the towers is unparalleled.
The water without the fan stays about 25c (in my 20c room)
with the fan, I can get the water down to 18c, under load. CPU dips to 29c, motherboard at 34c. Condensation is starting to worry me though.
Having a _five_ gallon reservior certainly is nice too, I can turn off the slightly loud l35 that runs water up the towers and stay running at moderatley cool temps for at least 2 hours at full load before I have to fire it back up and cool the water down.
The tubes got cloudy really fast though, I don't know if the food coloring had anything to do with that or if it's just the minerals in the water. I've been adding the rubbing alcohol+bleach to the water, and it makes my room so fresh smelling, expecially after the coverings on the tubes sprung a leak and spat out 3 1/2 gallons of water onto my floor.

Isnt bleach bad to inhale?
"Breathing in the fumes of cleaners containing a high concentration of chlorine can irritate the lungs. This is particularly dangerous for people suffering from heart conditions or chronic respiratory problems such as asthma or emphysema. And the risks are compounded when the cleaners are used in small, poorly ventilated rooms, such as the bathroom. Chlorine is also a highly corrosive substance, capable of damaging skin, eyes, and other membranes. Chlorine was listed as a hazardous air pollutant in the 1990 Clean Air Act, and exposure to chlorine in the workplace is regulated by federal standards."

Are you using tap water?
You could try running your water through a filter to see if it's minerals causing the tubes to cloud.

I'm not too concerned about breathing in the bleach, as I only put a drop or two in, every two weeks. rubbing alcohol is roughly one ounce every time I fill it up, which is about 16 oz every two or three days, every 8 hours if I have the fan on =P
-edit-
Filtering, I never thought too much of since the fabric covering the towers is a fine cotton mesh (think pantyhose) underneath the socks, and then a covering over top of that. Three layers of fabric is more than enough to keep most sediment out, and if it gets bad, I just have to point the output out the window, empty it, and refill it!
Also edit for spelling errors, stupid powerbook keyboard

So bleach is working out best for you? I would think that that is one of the best choices besides a evaporitive cooler additive. Bleach can be used to sanitize water if nessacary, plus think of an indoor spa, way more chemicals in those things than that lil bucket.
