Page file is just a way to use the HDD as ram from back in the early windows days when ram costed to much to get. As for how much you should use I am not sure. I used a guide once to set mine up to a good amount but I didnt notice any improvment so I just have windows manage it for me now.

By default in Windows XP the page file = 1.5 x total amount of physical ram
e.g 504MB of ram = 752MB of hard disk space for the page file.
I have another question...would setting a page file on another HDD connected help performance?

thats awsome :) thanks answered all my questions.
Rule of the thumb - always set pagefile size to constant to avoid fragmentation, if your pagefile is fragmented, defragment it.
I've got 512 megs of RAM and 512 of swap is definietly not enough, at least for me. I used to run 2 gig swap, as some applications used more mem, but now I'm happy with 1gig swap. So depending on your free space, I'd recommend setting it to 2gig or 1gig.
Also, having bigger swap is like having bigger HDD - there's less internal fragmentation and swapping is faster. If possible, have swap on fast HDD, the best if "some other disk" on separate cable (disk not used for most of apps / system) - you get kind of pararell read/write then.
