What in the world could cause a wireless router that was transfering internet traffic pefectly for about 1 1/2 months to just suddenly have no connectivity to the wireless adapters hooked up to it ?
I plan to go fix the router that I share with my neighbors, but I'm confused as to why all of a sudden it just stopped connecting properly. I was on the net with a program called trillian (IM client) and a java chat room (raidersoft) through a web page and bleeh went from good reception to nada.

I don't get it and have not been able to find the answers, some say it is because of a software firewall or the software firewall was set to high, that can't be as in those 1 1/2 months I had Mcafee personal firewall 5 on set on tight security and it was also on when setting up the router (tried disabling the firewall and connecting to the router, bubkiss) I can connect to the router if I manually plug in the IP, subnet and default gateway, in the TCP/IP propeties on the wireless adapter, but thats just to the router, don't know the preferred DNS server, so no internet (DNS server addresses change all the time right?). It used to connect with everything set to obtain auto. Even when I can connect to just the router the adapter has trouble accessing the web based setup program (Linksys 192.168.1.1) gotta be at the comp hard lined to it, thats at the neighbors.

There are two other wireless networks in the area, one of them is a linksys router like the one I use (theres is G, mines B) I have mine set on channel 6 the default could that after a couple months of perfect connections cause the issue even if the other linksys router has been around since I setup my router?

GRRR, I'm upset, I know I can get it working again, no problem there, but the reason as to why it crapped out is a mystery and bothers me the most

try a reset. and the DNS server should be the IP of your router since you're not directly connected to the internet.

Could it be the trillian bug thing that enabled ppl to backdoor or something like that?

*gulp* I don't like the sound of that...does trillian have a security flaw? and if it does how can I find out if my comp has the problem? (the first time the router crapped out I was using the new 3.1, the second time explained below, I tried ver. 0.74 patch I)

Heres the deal now, I went over to fix it, all it needed was to reset the dsl modem, theres 3 lights on it, all should be green to have the internet (power, broadband link, and LAN lights) when I got there the Lan light was not on, so I just turned it off for about 30 secs. and then back on to reset everything. After it was back on the three lights all went on eventually. I checked the conncection on the comp hard lined to the router pefect. And to make sure that if an interference prob was an issue I changed the router from channel 6 to 7. after that I checked my neighbors laptop, internet back up. So I left to check my connection, it was back up, I played some counterstrike, and then after bout 2 hrs of gameplay I decided to use trillian again, (its a IM client that combines AIM, yahoo etc) but not the version of trillian that was loaded before when the connection first crapped out, it was a earlier version, well it connected but it was running like a hog, I figured maybe I should restart and try again I did, I connected back to the router, loaded trillian it ran like crap again, restarted comp, BLEHH, not connecting to the router, doesn't even get to the point where it say aquiring network address anymore.....COULD A IM CLIENT LIKE TRILLIAN CAUSE A PROBLEM WITH THE DSL MODEM AND/OR ROUTER TO SCREW UP CONNECTING TO THE INTERNET?

Try Using GAIM
