Hard drive mounting.
Note use of foam, and nylon hardware to minimize vibration.
Note that hard drive can pivot on one axis, as the foam will flex and allot the hard drive to move towards its ide connectors. The plywood will be installed with the long side up, if that makes sense, so the drive will be able to pivot and the foam will absorb shock from potholes.

say, I recognize that 1.8 celeron =P
you should put it inside a subwoofer enclosure, unless it's just going to hide in your trunk

it's getting screwed into the back seats, between the seats and my subs. I have an SUV.
Very interesting so far...looking good.

Do you have any problems with the subs and the carputer? I just installed a carputer a few days ago and I'm a little nervous about mounting it too close to the subs (2x 10").

If they aren't electromagneticly sheilded it will probably cause a problem.

absolutely no problem.
I'll skip the physics, but I could mount my HD on the back of my subwoofer and be fine, magnetically speaking
all this magnetic shielding hubbub is an old wives tale, besides CRT monitors

Really? Could you please elaborate on the physics and details? I've read dozens of threads and pages, and I even built a (crappy!) faraday cage to try to mitigate the problem. If it is really safe to mount the laptop near the subs then I would love to mount it on top of the sub box! Thanks :)

........If i put a setup like that next to the JL W6's, they would be either wiped clean of anything on em, or it would skip the read/write head so bad on the first bump that the drive would be junk.
Good sheilding for high-powered sub systems= Extreme Dynamat, the one with the aluminum external layer.
Layer the enclosure of the comp 1 er 2 times, and it will sheild from most every bass hit you can throw at it. The tar/aluminum coating will help in the avoidence of the magnets, and will hide the unit from possible theifs. ;)

grrrrr
you don't need magnetic shielding on these, and I'm becoming more and more confident that you don't need vibration shielding

respect!
ive been daydreaming about something similar to this since i first started to really get into computers back in 97. glad to see someone doing it. and with pics! keep up the good work greenman100 your lighting a fire under my arse to take on a project like this as well.
