View Full Version : Any Way to Add HD w/out formatting?
I'm buying a new hard drive cause I filled up already half of my hard drive with movies and music. Last time I added a new harddrive, I reformatted my computer, but this time I don't want to reformat all my hard drives

If you had to format both, your old and new harddisk last time you added one, you did something wrong, period.
Since we don't know what you did, we can't know what you did wrong either of course.

You leave your old hard drive as it was and then just connect your new hard drive and format it in windows. I donīt see whatīs so complicated about that.

Well in order for it to be used you have to have some sort of format. Good news, most drives now, you can transfer the information relativley painless over to the new drive. Then do as you like to the old drive. Seagate has 'Seatool', Maxtor has 'Maxblast' ,and so forth.. Bottom line a format is in order for any use of a drive. Most drives make this really easy though. Unless you plan to get rid of this drive a simple format in windows is good idea. If it is to be sold. Do a couple of passes(one is good enough) of zero-ing the drive.
If you like you can just instal the drive let it be detected, and then use windows to format it to your liking. This option is for just a storage/pagefile drive.

you shouldnt have to format other harddrives to install an new one
you will have to format your new one, but that wont matter as it wont have anything on it

no one knows, it's a pix from the net, one of the funny pix on the net :). Yes, do what others have said, format the new one, install window on that one, and plug the old one in as slave.
