Have you installed the driver for the promise controller?

yeah i had them installed, it turns out all i had to do was initialize the drive with the disk management tool inside computere management. but i think there is still 1 problem.when i boot up the machine. it shows me.

ide 0
primary master
primary slave
ide 1
secondary master
secondary slave
ide 2
NONE

why is it not showing up in dos?

Does the Promise bios show the drive attached to it? If so then you're good. :) If you're booting into DOS, its possibly not showing up because no driver was loaded in autoexec.bat for the Promise controller.

I missed your questions about IDE/raid before. If you're looking for basic info, heres a good (maybe a bit wordy though) raid explanation: http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/perf/raid/levels/single.htm. If you're asking about the Promise controller, then the difference is minimal. The Promise raid host controllers will create single drive raid "arrays" which is pretty much the same as a direct IDE connection to your mobo. However, on some older Promise controllers, they will do some funky stripping on singal drive "arrays" which prevent the drive from being read if connected to a standard IDE socket.

Does it show up in the Disk Management part at all in the Administrative tools? It sounds like it's not properly formatted yet. At least, that's what happens to my drives when i get a new one. :eh?:

edit: You may also want to check your motherboard manufacturer's site and see if they have any special fixes or drivers for your Promise Controller.

i had that problem before witha promise card, make sure you got the latest firmware upgrade, it fixed alot,, also dont do raid if your just using it for storage, no need to mess with that at present time.

it works fine in windows. it just doesn't show up on the bios boot up.
