I'm sorry to read that you're losing DSL because of the move. After you have been spoiled by a fast Web connection, 56K is a bit of a slap in the face.
There are modems galore. I don't think that you can go wrong with an external 56K from US Robotics. They're expensive, natch.
AFAIK, which often isn't very far, "shotgun" means having two 56K modems working on two different phone lines. This is an ISDN configuration. The problem is that ISDN costs a zillion bucks and it only doubles your 56 kbps bandwidth to 128 kbps.
I've never had a sustained DL at better than ~8 kbps on dial-up, so I suppose the question is: Is 16 kbps DL capability(or 8 kbps on a slightly sludgey day) worth ~$100 per month?
By all means, check out the ISDN possibilities in your area. Maybe it's not so expensive any more.

get a hardware modem. US robotics are great. A good modem is goint to run you $40 or more, but they are much better than a winmodem.

never get a winmodem. they suck, and most don't run on 2k.
Get the USR external 56k sportster. Best modem I've ever had, even though it's still 56k.
