Hi, i am looking for a vid card. i am either going to get the X800 PRO (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-465&catalog=23&manufactory=BROWSE) or the 6600 GT (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-145-098&depa=0) . If i get the X800 pro i will prob flash it to an xt. i will prob need a linkie to a guide for this, and possibly some driver links also plz. i will greatly apprecitate it. i do not plan to go into sli.

Which is more "bang for buck"

The mobo i will be getting is the dfi lanparty ultra d.

Do you think that this is a good idea?

Is it a good idea to flash the bios to an xt???

Any help would be great. thanks

if they're both the same price..i think the 800 would give you more.. 800=6800 700=6600?

Hello Mate,

If you talk about "bang for the buck", I would say the 6600GT. Although the X800 Pro is a very good card, it is a bit expensive.I faced the same dilemma not too long ago. I mate my choice based on the pricing. One has to agree that you cannot really flash a 6600GT to anything (you can get a 6200 and mod it to a 6600) but hey, the XFX clocks pretty well even at stock cooling. I'm running mine at 525/1.09 (a very mild OC, I'm really waiting for a custom cooling solution, have not decided if I should go with WC/Phase change or not).

There is nothing wrong in trying to flash a video card. You can always flash back to the stock BIOS if you do a bad flash. These two links may help you with that.

You may not be able to flash it to an xt.
the vivo cards have a better chance though.
just hope you get 1.6ns ram on both sides
I would get a x800p personally, but your call
x800p will woop a 6600gt around, but 2x6600gts will give the x800p a run for its money.
good luck

Thank you so much super nade. But the X800 pro has 12 pixil pipes which can beocme 16, while the 6600GT has only 8 (correct me if im wrong). also thsi card will have to last me 1.5-2.5 years. so is the ati better in the long run??? thanks for help.

Stupid question: does it only work for gigabyte X800 Pros?

Mate.

If you are thinking about 1.5-2 years, I would say the x800Pro is a good choice. But you have to be carreful in what you buy, look at what people have in the Ati subforum, lest you get burned by a card which cannot be unlocked. If you cannot unlock the pipes, the current price is a bit too much. Alternatively, you could wait for the full blown release of the x800xl's i.e well past the price gouging period (another month) and then the x800pro's may drop in price.

Also, an x800xl has a full 16 pipes guarenteed. I would get the x800xl because of faster RAM. However I dont think the current xl's clock very well. To answer your second Q, I think Sapphires are moddable as well. I think you need a VIVO to do any mods.

My suggestion would be to wait a bit and see how the market plays out.

Supposedly, the Rosewill is a great card. I have not personaly owned one, but 1 XL = 2x 6600gt in nearly all the tests I have seen.

Mate,

Before you make a buy, this links are worth a read:

http://www.guru3d.com/article/Videocards/177/

http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/powercolor_radeon_x800_xl/

As you can see, they don't OC very well. I'd say your choice is pretty good. You can't really go wrong at stock speeds. The various flavours distinguish themselves whan it comes to cooling and overclockability.

Just remember, if you want to play Doom 3, Nvidia runs the game a lot better. That's why I ordered my evga 6600GT yesterday from newegg at $184.

If they are OpenGL based games, go with the 6600GT (or any other higher end NVidia) and you won't be disappointed.

X800XL is the best bang for the buck.

Supposedly, the Rosewill is a great card. I have not personaly owned one, but 1 XL = 2x 6600gt in nearly all the tests I have seen.

It's identical to a BBA ATI X800XL.

It was when the 6600GT came out but now thw X800XL is.

Shadowknight,

The 6600GT is a good card and offers very good value (but not quite as good as the X800XL which is a newer card). Also, you may have to play with the 6600GT to get it to work properly. I've had compatibility issues with some hardware. I've had no such problems with the ATI cards. Something to consider.

fldrice,

A very good deal. Great find! :santa:

im confused....why would you even want to compare or decide between the x800 and the 6600.....

obviously the x800 is better....hell it should be....compare it with the 6800 though its a much better match up....

decide between those two cards.......then get the 6800 and never look back....

The 6800GT's are great cards and less quirky than the 6600GT's I've tested, but they are around $100.00 more than an X800XL and they are not as fast in most things. Doom3 not withstanding.

so then get a regular 6800 and unlock the pipes and overclock.....then you got urself a 6800gt and ya saved....

not sure the diff in price between a regular 6800 and a gt but it could be a decent chunk of change im sure....

You just posted this in another thread:

"ugh i would never buy anything used.....id rather have some form of warranty over saving a buck or two....."

What good is buying a new card (to get the warranty) and then modding it (thus voiding the warranty and "saving a buck or two")???

Please take a position, and it's always a good idea to engage your brain before posting. Who do you think you are, John Kerry???

X800XL will beat the 6600gt in the long run no matter what. I had the same dilema for my new computer(I had to make it last 5 years) so I got an x800 pro and flashed it to an xt pe. I have my own job now so I don't need it to last 5 years but I think it'll stay with me for a while.
