Not sure where this belongs, so putting it here. If it should go in the cooling section, please relocate. Thanks

Browsing at work, came across: http://www.surpluscenter.com/item.asp?UID=2005041805361400&item=1-1302&catname=electric

Was wondering what you all thought about possibly using this as a "Reservoir" or possibly to take the need for a radiator out of the system.

Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

you need to be careful with this stuff. i dont know what 200BTU is in terms of watts but if it doesn't have the ability to remove more heat than your watercooling loop produces then it gradually turns into a nice insulator to keep your loop nice and toasty rather than cold since you'd have greater heat flow into the cooler than out

I remember some of the guys over in the Extreme Cooling section were buying them as parts for a homemade chiller unit, but I don't get over there much and don't know how they came out.
Ask a mod "pretty please" and he'll move this over there for ya, and you can search the term "Soda Fountain" in the extreme cooling section to see if there's some hits. ;)

IMHO, a great deal if it works on the up to date heaters..er..processors. This is still in my bookmarks from a year or two ago. The shipping will raise the price some cause it's 44 pounds.

Using that unit as is to chill water would be deadly. It only has a 1/12 hp motor, and most people would recommend having atleast 1/4 to 1/3 hp motors. It would be a great unit for modificatinos though. It already has a huge resovior and is in a tidy little package.

200 BTU cooling capacity - that is tiny, nowhere near enough to keep a processor cool, i dont even think thats enough for a vidcard or a north bridge

ok did some googling, it would appear that 200 BTU is rougly 60 watts. (3.4 btu per watt/hour)

although a BIX III is rated for 9702 BTU per hour, or 2850 watts or so. There is no way that a computer can put out that much heat, so why is a part designed for a computer rated for that? I have the suspicion that the conversion i got was incorrect, or doesnt apply to this situtation.

lets assume a BIX III can handle 1000 watts (which is a ton, prolly an over estimate)

that makes your 200 BTU cooler able to handle roughly 21 watts. Not very useful.

You are correct with that 3.4 btu per watt. We are talking something that was sopposed to cool pop by about 10-20 deg F.

but then why does a BIX III need to be able to cool 2850 watts? Thats enough for nearly 20 a64 processors!! (@ stock)

( i mean, the standard wall outlet is on a 15 amp breaker, so thats 1800 watts maximum anyway)

You might be able to run two in tandem. That might be a bit big though

The reason that the BIX III is rated for 2850 watts is because it can, at maximum efficiancy, get rid of that many watts. Obviously there is not a personal computer out there that will dump 2850 watts into a cooling loop, so it is really there as window dressing. It just helps to compare it to other radiators.

And running two in tandum would use a tremendous amount of power and only 120 watts. That is barely enough to cool an overclocked prescott, let alone anything else.

Well, good information to have. Will keep looking for the next unique mod ;)
