Anybody know where I can grab one? By "cheap," I mean under $40. Refurbs are fine with me provided that they are from a reputable vendor or directly from the manufacturer.

good luck, the 4200 is the cheapest i've seen so far, i hope that thing can do about 3000 point in 3Dmark03, then i'm happy, my 9550 that i fried did 3300 on 3Dmark03, the freaking car was suppose to be at myhouse on monday/today, i missed both when the guy came and deliver lol, so i'm gonna wait till tomorrow.

Shipping was $11 ground for that thing. Not so much of a deal when you add that.

people at ebay bet like they are millionairs, 100+ for a 9600pro, plz, 100+ i can get a 9800pro. Ti4200 on the other hand is close to 70shipped on there, this is 30 shipped, not so hot but close enough for me to buy one. if you're like me and doesn't like to game, a TI4200 still beats the pants out of FX5200 or 9200SE that's still costing 50+ where else.

But that is the 64 mb edition. Maybe it still beats the crap out of them but the version he would want I am geussing would be 128.

The PNY site has the FX5200 for the same price as the Ti4200, although the Ti4200 spanks it. The Ti4600 spanks all of them, but are harder to find. The Radeon 9000 Pro is faster than the FX5200 or 9200 (SE or otherwise) and usually a little better than the 9600SE. In the Quake3 benchmark, it actually beats the 9600 non-pro by .5 FPS. Ideally I'd like the 128 MB Ti4200 if not a 4400-4800. As I understand it, the 4800 is just the AGP 8x version of the 4600.

It is really depend on your budget, 50 will not get you a Ti4400 or anything above that, 50 is gonna be TI4200 if you really hunt it down on ebay (i do not know anywhere else that sales Ti cards for less than 100 because they kept the price from a few years ago). Moving up the chain to the 70 dollar range we have the 9550 that OC to a 9600, this is 128bit, 4 pipes. 100 will get a 9600pro, or maybe an XT. 130 will get a 9800pro, and 150 to 160 you are smelling 6600GT. That's with bargain hunting already, anything cheaper than what i've listed is gonna be real hard to find. From my experience either go for bottom end or go for top end, the 6600GT is excelent for the price/performance ratio.

As I understand it, the 4800 is just the AGP 8x version of the 4600.

There are two flavors of 4800. There is a 4800SE which is an overclocked TI4200 core on a Ti4600 PCB. These cores run at 275mhz from the factory (stock 4400 speed coincidentally) whereas a Ti4600 core runs at 300mhz (and a stock Ti4200 core runs at 250mhz). These 4800SEs do have the faster ram which runs at 650mhz (typical 4200s have 4ns memory, which translates to about 500mhz) and as you stated they are AGP 8x.

Then there are 'real' Ti4800s which are exactly the same as Ti4600s except they are AGP 8x. These offer no real performance advantage over a 4600. The additional AGP bandwidth doesn't have any effect on framerates because it's not the bottleneck.

There is another oddball called the Ti4280. These are Ti4200 cores running at the stock 250mhz but are 8x AGP and usually (but not always) have faster ram. To my knowledge all 4280s have 128mb of ram.

My advice is hunt for a 4600. I scored a used PNY off ebay for $60 shipped, and a brand new Albatron still sealed in the box for $75 shipped. That was six months ago, and there's still nothing in that price range that can touch these cards.

you know there is a reason that the ti4200 was so dam popular. it can oc like a bat out of hell. an oc ti4200 will take a ti4400 maybe a ti4600 any day.

It's true that Ti4200s do OC very well, but so do Ti4400s and Ti4600s. So yeah, someone may OC their Ti4200 to perform better than a stock 4600, but at the end of the day the 4600 will OC and still be faster by a decent margin.

The Ti4600 came in today, and it is smokin' compared to the Radeon 9000 Pro it replaced. It beat it by right around 5,000 3Dmarks in '01. Does anyone know which drivers are the best to use with the GF4 Ti series? I'm using the ExtremeG 66.93 drivers right now, and they seem to be OK.

It doesn't seem to have a whole lot of headroom for overclocking. I was getting system crashes with the core at 310 MHz, which is only 10 above stock, so I probably need better cooling on it if I expect to get the core up any. Even so, overclocking the core will probably make very little difference.

The RAM surprised me. I was able to get it to 350 (700 DDR) MHz with no artifacts, and didn't really try pushing it much higher, although, predictably, it crashed at 400 MHz when I accidentally set it to that. The real surprise, though, was how little difference the RAM overclock made. In 3DMark 01, which uses DirectX 8, I scored exactly 13800 3DMarks @ stock, with default settings (1024x768, AA and AF off). With the RAM overclocked 50 MHz, I scored 13901, which was kind of disappointing. I was using 44.03 Omega drivers ("Quality" setting) if anybody is wondering. Still, even at stock, this card absolutely destroys my old Radeon 9000 Pro in 3DMark, especially '01 (by somewhere in the neighborhood of 6,000 3DMarks, possibly more). I am very satisfied with this purchase. Best $50 I could have spent on a video card. Heck, a new FX5200 runs around that price, and this destroys it.

nice man, my 64MB got crippled, hehe i wipped out 11K in 01 after I OC it, oh well, it was cheap and i don't need alot of gaming power, next card will probably be the 6600GT unless i get a new rig again.
