Hey,

I hope you guys with all the knowledge can help me out, because i'm stuck.

Right, I've just upgraded my 2 machine LAN from old 10Mbps NICs and a 10Mbps 'handy hub', to 100Mbps NICs and some standard UTP crossover RJ45 cabling. I'm running win98 on one machine and Win2000 on the other (i'm aware of the 98-to-2000 file access problems that occur and know how to get round them). I just can't seem to get win98 to send any data back to win2000.

Now i've done everything to try and get it to work (i'm sure i have all the right client, service and protocols installed etc and have done everything i did to make the last LAN work). So i thought perhaps it was the cable.

Finally getting onto my question: Does anyone know how the cable should be wired? I got it from my local small time computer shop (where they wire it themselves) and i wondered if he had got it wrong, hence the problems. There's 8 wires inside and the colours go like this:

One terminator is: white, orange, white, blue, white, green, white, brown

The other terminator is:
white, blue, white, green, white, orange, brown, white

Now i don't know anything about cables, but that last combination does seem a bit odd (not following all the other patterns). Is that correct? Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks for any help you could provide.

Some of the cables are mulitcolored. So I'm not sure how your pinout is actually arranged by your description. I did a little searching for a good, to the point diagram and cable spec for x-overs..you can find it at the bottom of this (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/networking/port_expand.htm) page. Hope this helps!

looking from above, you have eight wires. the first and second should become the third and sixth on the other end and the third and sixth on the first connector need to become 1 and 2 on the next one.

Should be like this
End 1
1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8

End 2

3-6-1-4-5-2-7-8

As William said. The white wires should have some color on them...they're really one of the four colors striped with white. It looks like your crossover is messed up.
